I don't know if you are aware of it but there has been problems found with Java7 update6.

I posted about it here:

Firefox may already have asked you to update to Java7 update7, with instructions.

If not please follow the previous instructions i posted and update to Java7 update7 (you'll need the 64bit version)

This will clean up some orphan entries in the registry and will double check that there aren't any hidden problems.

I thought I did. At least it was the IE that didn't have 64-bit in brackets, but I'll look again. Is there a way of checking that I am using 32-bit? Otherwise, I'll use the other scanner. I'll try to do it in the next couple of days, but if I don't manage that it'll be ten days or so as I'm away for a week shortly. Many thanks.

I am no expert myself but I had this problem a while back.

 

I looked around the internet for program deleters and found a program called "Unlocker" (has an icon of a magic wand). I used it to delete all the programs and files that were affected (failed to run Java) and then just reinstalled them from scratch again. It works fine now.

 

I don't know how reliable this method is, so maybe before going ahead with it, an administrator may give his say on the method?

 

Also, I use Avast free antivirus. It seems to do the job just perfectly and it is easy to use. Just do a boot time scan with high sensitivity every now and then and also when you suspect something and it should sort you out.

Thanks Snodge, I'll check that out, but all appears ok now other than start/stop/start video on, say, iplayer; don't know if that's related. Otherwise, Starbuck, all appears fine. Many thanks.

The Java problem. Exactly as at the start of this thread. But since then it has really had a fit! It wouldn't start yesterday and autorepair (or whatever it's called) couldn't repair it. Then, when I tried to start it again I got a blue screen before being told again that it wouldn't start. Then, when I tried again it worked perfectly, other than the recurring Java problem.

You do certainly seem to have a lot of problems with Java.

Because of the recent bad press that Java has been getting, there's a lot of talk about whether Java is really needed.

I actually use the Firefox addon ... NoScript which only enables Java for sites that i think actually need it.

If i go to a site that needs it, i get a message that it's required.

I then have the option of enabling it.

Most sites don't really need it.

Maybe using something like this or just disabling or removing it would be an answer to the on going problem.

Thanks. Sorry for the delay (again); tried checkdisk, which I thought fixed it last time, but not this time. Presume NoScript is for Firefox only?

Unfortunately yes.

But you can disable Java within IE.

When you encounter a site that requires Java (for example, some small online games and calculators), you can re-enable Java easily again.

Hi, just how old is that version of Firefox? if you go to program files, via Computer, then hover the mouse over it it should give an information box and date of installation, even if it won't open for you.

I would really recommend though to remove it altogether if more than a year old, and download and install the most recent version, if only because of the security aspect of it.

Hopefully a new version will open anyway.
