Guest asklucas Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Hi Folks, I'm using XenServer 4.x for almost a year now but want to migrate to Hyper-V RTM for a number of reasons. Moving the VMs (W2k3 R2 SP2) from XenServer to Hyper-V works well, different methods are possible (SC VMM 2008 Beta P2V, Ghost Corp. Edition, other tools). However, the migrated VMs boot enormously slow on Hyper-V. It takes 30 minutes to hours until the logon screen, again 30 minutes to hours until logon completes. However, explorer.exe doesn't start. In taskmgr.exe and compmgmt.msc I can see, that not a single service was started, not even eventlog! I haven't found any information on the web with a similar behaviour of Windows! It seems it never happened before on Windows, that not a single service starts! The issue is reproducible using clean installs of XenServer, creating a clean W2k3 VM and XenTools and then moving it to a clean install of Hyper-V. Any clue how to troubleshoot this? Thanks in advance! L.

Must be a kind of driver issue. That's why I post here; I already posted in: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/384720b1-fa68-497e-bd1d-534f777fe292 L. Guest Bill Grant Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Re: VMs do not start ANY services after migration from XenServer t Re: VMs do not start ANY services after migration from XenServer t Have you tried removing the Zen Tools before you do the conversion. Leaving VMWare or Virtual Server tools installed causes all sorts of odd problems. In most cases they cannot be removed afterwards. After you get a Server 2003 vm running under Hyper-V you need to install the Integration Components to improve performance and install drivers for the VMBus devices. This requires SP2 for Server 2003. Guest asklucas Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Re: VMs do not start ANY services after migration from XenServer t Re: VMs do not start ANY services after migration from XenServer t Dear Bill, it doesn't make any difference, whether I remove the XenTools before or after conversion. The VMs boot fine, unless I install the Hyper-V Integration Components. Then I get this issue where no services at all start up. It seems, as if the XenTools leave some dirt in the system even after uninstalling them, which collides with the Hyper-V Integration Components. L.
