Can you use a MacBook plugged in all the time?

Does being plugged in constantly 24/7 (I use it as a ‘desktop’) kill the battery? Can it lead to spicy pillow? Is it better to use it on battery and increase the number of charge cycles on the battery ‘for no reason’?
