When I try to switch my computer on, the P5N-D opening screen appears briefly before being replaced by a DOS screen warning "USB device over current detected" with a timer counting down for 20 seconds after which the power cuts off again. It still does this even after I have removed every single USB device. Is there any cure short of replacing the motherboard?

Problem solved! Thanks to anyone who may have wondering what to suggest.

One of the USB connectors on the front of the case was evidently damaged and disconnecting the cable between the motherboard and it (and another USB connector) did the trick.

First, a welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help, second, well done for finding it yourself, and also thanks for letting us know. Nice when it is simple to sort like that.
