Guest /u/hmzhv Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 Hey everyone, I’m a computer science major up in Canada, I have a 8 gb ram 256? gb ssd m1 air and I am looking to upgrade. I am wrestling with the m3 air 24 gb ram 1tb ssd (Apple M3 chip with 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine) and the m3 pro 18 gb ram 512 gb ssd (with the Apple M3 Pro chip with 11‑core CPU, 14‑core GPU and 16‑core Neural Engine) both are the same price - 2500 cad I want to use this mac for hard core software development, with my current mac I have to be very cautious about my memory and what applications I have open and I hate it. I’m almost used up all my ssd storage and I barely have any huge projects on there that, only a dozen medium sized projects. I want to keep this mac for a while, and I want to use it to initially create production level applications - so startups. I understand that the most important things for a dev are ram and ssd, which is why the macbook air appeals, but on the other hand the fan, better display, heavier so I assume better built (correct me if im wrong), better audio, and dual monitor support makes the mac pro standout, However I get less ram and less storage which sucks. I want a laptop I can use to make front to back production level applications, where I can have as many tabs as I want open, I can have docker containers running, kubernetes, github git, cloud platforms, vscode, rider, xcode, and as many chrome tabs as I need. I want to never have my mac overheat while I do this. I am also a college student so upgrading the mac pro specifications is out of the question, unless I yolo it. I’m planning to use this mac to scale applications I make too, so that I can deploy them in production, I see myself making my next startup using this mac.
