Hi All,

My daughter has just tried to upgrade the RAM in her Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop from 1GB to 2.5Gb.

The present RAM is 2x500Mb and I suggested that she purchased from Crucial another 2Gb strip to make 2.5Gb in Total.

I sent the instructions from the Dell manual and she has carried out the upgrade as required, but the new RAM is not recognised.

I can't have a look at the problem myself as she works some 400 miles away in Edinburgh!

The new RAM is placed under the keyboard in DIMMA slot and the second slot is in the base for any additional RAM, DIMMB. The laptop is

working on windows 7 operating system.

Any ideas please.

Regards

J

Hi, a bit difficult to advise without full details of the RAM she bought.

I can only ask first did she use the Crucial scanner to identify the type of RAM needed?

Secondly did she actually buy what was recommended?

Thirdly, it may be that it will work at just 2GB installed by removing that odd 500MB stick as there could be a miss match between the old and new.

RAM Upgrade for Inspirion 1520

Hi Nev,

Thanks for the reply, I should have said the operating system is Windows Vista not 7.

The Crucial check said that the Laptop could take 2x2Gb sticks of RAM and it already had 1Gb.

I didn't realise this was made up of 2x500Mb sticks in different locations. One stick is under the keyboard

while the other is in the base of the machine. I suggested that 3Gb would be enough and to purchace

just the one 2Gb stick. 'Imagine my surprise', well you can guess.

My daughter says thanks and she will try again with just the 2Gb stick under the keyboard, this is

the primary location. Perhaps the other 500Mb can be added later.

Thanks again

OK thanks, and lets see if that makes a difference then.

If any further problems, ask her to join and then we can work directly, it saves time in her sending you details, then on to us and again going back the other way.

Dell 1520 Upgraded RAM.

Hi Nev.

Bright Lass, followed instructions and RAM upgraded to 2Gb now, will try the extra 500Mb at the weekend.

I did re-read the Dell instructions and noticed that you are advised to remove the battery before carrying

out the upgrade. Perhaps this helped. I've never owned a laptop and not done much work on them, too fiddly!

Thanks again for your help.

Thread Closed I think.

Regards
