I recently discovered that with Sequoia 15.1, we can now install apps directly onto an external SSD and use them just like they’re installed on the Mac’s internal storage.

To set it up:

First, format the external SSD as APFS using Disk Utility.

Second, go to the App Store settings and enable “Download and install large apps to a separate disk.

Third, select the connected external SSD as the installation location.

From now on, any app larger than 1 GB will automatically be installed on the external SSD. This makes upgrading to larger storage Macs—and paying the Apple premium—unnecessary!
