I had optimized charging set to 85%, now it charges past it?

Like title says, can someone help me better understand how the optimize battery charging feature work? The past month with the feature on, I set it to 85% and I would wake up to my phone at 85%, but the past day or so, whenever I charge my phone now, it charged past 85%. I didn't even tweak the settings or anything!
