MacBook Air M1 is activation locked to my old Apple ID Email. Can I solve this?

My M1 Air has been in storage for atleast a year and in that time I changed the email connected with my Apple ID (but it's still technically the same Apple ID) and today I went to charge it so I could reset it and give it to a friend, reinstalled macOS and now I am stuck at activation lock as the Mac is still seeing my old Apple ID Email as the lock. I have tried my current Apple ID password with the old email and no dice. Any advice would be helpful
