Can I plug in an external keyboard to my liquid damaged Mac for data transfer?

Title is as it says, my mac has liquid damage and the motherboard is screwed. I can’t even log in because the keyboard is acting like I’m holding the option key down. I want to get everything (including apps) off of my old Mac onto my new one. Would plugging in an external keyboard work here or not?
