Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

Have you set the disk drive in BIOS to be the first in the boot process?

Is the disk you have a system recovery disk that came with the computer, or a full Microsoft Windows XP disk?

d31vm non system disk error

Yes disk drive is #1, HD is listed as #4. The disk is a full win xp. I have tried 2 differant MW xp disk, and also a differant HD. Same message comes up. The Cd drive light comes on and spins as it is reading the disk then the message comes up as non system disk reinsert system disk and hit any key.

Thanks for your help.

Hi

So you are trying to load Windows from the CD/DVD drive?

Make sure the CD/DVD is set to boot first and press a key when it displays the prompt to boot from CD/DVD, then it should boot from the CD/DVD.

Hi, the only thing I can see now is a faulty CD/DVD drive, as being the cause. You say you have tried different hard drives, so having been inside the case, check that all connections to the disk drive haven't been disturbed, and make sure they are correctly and fully pushed home, take each one off and inspect for bent or broken pins before fully pushing back on. If that doesn't help, then it just may be the drive itself has died.

They can still run up and make the appropriate noises, but if the read head has burned out, it can't read the disk.

Yes that is what I thought, just hated to pull it all out again. Ok Thanks will give it a shot, not sure what else it could be other than that.
