Time Machine Backup Help

I need to bring my Mac in for service soon, so I'm trying to back up my laptop onto an external hard drive. When I try to configure my external disk with Time Machine, I get a message that says "Erasing will destroy all information on “Seagate Backup Plus Drive” and can’t be undone. The volume must be erased because it has an incompatible file system."

After some googling, I think this is because of the way the drive is configured. People suggest moving the items on my external drive somewhere else, letting Time Machine erase it/reconfigure it, and then moving everything back. However, I did see one post that said these items would no longer be readable by a Windows computer. This is an issue for me because I am sharing the drive with family members who use Windows devices. Can anyone confirm if this is true or not? Is there a way to back up my laptop onto this drive without erasing/moving things around, or do I need to get another hard drive?

Thank you!
