Guest Magnolia Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Recently my computer at start up has done one of the following: 1. continuously reboot before windows log in 2. stuck on windows xp load ribbon indefinitely 3. option of safe mode, last known good config, normal, all of which, upon choosing, causes the entire system to reboot again. Eventually after many many tries I can use my computer, but the sneaky thing likes to reboot automatically after updates in the middle of the night, which i then wake up to not being able to get into windows. I'm currently running several scans but nothing malicious seems to be found. Also, whenever I finally make it to windows, I get messages about my system recovering from a serious error, but no ways to prevent it or fix the problem.

Do you get the same behavior in Safe Mode?
Guest Aaron Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Re: startup problems ON a computer what works, Download The ulitmate boot cd for windows, that will will allow you to build a boot disk, and load a gui on the system. From there, run a check disk, and reboot, if no dice, boot from UBCW and then copy a system restore registry back up into your current registry directory. Guest Ray Parrish Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Re: startup problems You need to stop the automatic reboots so you can catch the error screen and see what's going on. http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_disable_automatic_resta.htm Once you've followed those instructions report back with the error that is reported on the blue screen when you machine stops the next time. You may have RPC (remote procedure call) service problems with windows update. Switch windows update from automatically download/install to download and let me install. Then you can watch the screen and see more of what's happening. You might also look in Even Viewer for errors during those time periods. Something there might give a hint. What is hte last change you made to the computer? Did this problem coincide with or occur just after that? What's your OS version and SP status? Home? Pro? Etc.
