Siri, Tell Me The News

Using that prompt with Siri (on iOS) gives you a 5 min summary of the news, played via the Podcasts app. (For me in the UK, that comes from the BBC. Yours may come from elsewhere based on your region.)

Today, for no reason, that prompt stopped working. The response now is: "I'll search Apple Music for it." Then it opens Apple music.

I haven't updated the OS or any software. One day it worked, the next day it didn't.

My reason for posting this isn't to elicit alternative ways of getting the news, but to draw attention to a decade with Siri and to illustrate Apple's approach to AI. This here today, gone tomorrow unreliability is the undoing of any so called AI system.

Does Craig Federighi (Head of Software) at Apple (or anyone else at Apple) not understand this basic concept? Anything falling below (allowing for a generous margin of error of 5%) 95% reliability means it does not work. (Even the most meagre hosting uptime guarantees are 98%+.)

This is fundamental.

Apple want us to automate our homes with Apple tech. Who in their right mind automates their Home when the reliability is this shocking? Worse still, even though it's early days, but my experience seems the same with Apple Intelligence. One day web page summaries (in macOS Safari) work. The next day, they don't. "Unavailable at this time. Try again later."

Can nobody at Apple point out to the senior team that the Emperor is wearing no clothes?
