My computer has two DVI ports but no HDMI.

I have just bought a new monitor which supports DVI and HDMI.

I know you can buy cables that will connect from the monitor's HDMI port to the DVI port on the comptuer. Would this improve things at all?

Thanks

Hi,

I'm a little confused....

I know you can buy cables that will connect from the monitor's HDMI port to the DVI port on the comptuer

What port do you use to connect at the moment?

Have you tried changing the resolution of your screen? Viewing will be best at what is known as the native resolution, if you post your monitor make and model, plus size, we should be able to work it out for you.

Just to add, considering the computer itself has only a DVI output, that is the best actual video quality the computer itself can provide, although adapter cables are available, they cannot improve the quality of picture, the rest is as Synapse says, down to the resolution settings.

Hello,

I am using DVI to DVI.

As my monitor has a HDMI port but my computer does not, I just wondered if I would see better performance by using a cable like this one to connect from DVI to HDMI:

My monitor is an Iiyama B2776HDS ProLite 27 inch LCD and computer Dell XPS420. I have it set at the correct resolution (1920x1080)

I am happy with the monitor as it is; I was just wondering if connecting to HDMI would make it even better.

Thanks

At the end of the day, both DVI and HDMI are capable of carrying the same quality of digital image. The quality will depend on both what is being sent as well as the monitor's best resolution. If, for example your monitor can accept a 1080p video and your computer has HD output of 1080p and the image is actually 1080p HD then that is what you are going to get on your monitor. It is, therefore, capable of showing video in 1080p (or i) resolution but is not about to magically create a better quality than what it is receiving.

The primary advantage to HDMI is the ability to receive digital audio along with the picture through a single compact cable interface.

This may be important if the monitor is actually a TV with a good sound system, otherwise your picture quality will be about the same.
