What actual reasons do Apple have for not introducing a global back gesture

I don’t see how they can logically explain the current inconsistency as beneficial to anyone for any reason. What possible drawbacks could there be for introducing a global back gesture preferably from either side of the screen?

 

I’m not moaning here I’m just genuinely interested what’s stopping them from implementing a simple idea that to me most people just seems objectively better?
