I simply copied what has been done in this link made by Colin Grant ! Kudos to him for working on this. So after searching online in Europe I did find "broken" 27" in Apple thunderbolt display. It looked bad due to a smoking environment. Glass was chipped on one side and the seller told me the thunderbolt cable was broken and it was not working with his silicon mac anymore despite having the official thunderbolt to USB-c converter. after connecting on the external thunderbolt display to make sure it worked, I haggled it down to 100 euros which to me was a fair price for a 27 inch 2k resolution and sexy display. (Yes there are better display now on the market, most of them don't pass my wife's approval as it is a living room computer) For this project : I had an Apple thunderbolt cable that had no use. I gathered the parts online thru AliExpress and Amazon. Glass replacement was found on Amazon it even had the Apple Logo ! I replaced the broken internal thunderbolt cable with a new one and tucked in the converter under the motherboard on the right. I glue gunned to secure it. Find LONG (+1m) and QUALITY high speed 40gbps USB-C cable extension, I tried few and did not work from the get go so YMMV depending on where you source it from. The buck converter can be found easily in AliExpress the quick charge protocol is the important part, I managed to get the same from the video for 4 euros. The wiring is simple and well explained in the video. The only problem I had was due to the fact my power extension USB-C cable was too thick so I had to cut down a part of the case to fit the cable properly, without it it had a 3-4 mm gap when closing the screen at the bottom. After controlling the voltage I closed the thing and fired it up! Now I have 2 USB-C cables straight into the MacBook Air M2, one for the display and the other that charges the Mac. Go for it, take your time ! submitted by /u/keegrom [link] [comments]
