What changed between Mac OS 14 and 15 that causes weird permissions issues?

I’d been using rsync on an old Mac OS 14 laptop as a backup destination for my Synology NAS (hyperbackup). Worked great.

 

Got a new computer with Mac OS 15 to replace the old server. I started with a clean install, followed the exact same process, and now when I try to use Hyperbackup I get an “Authentication failed” error. This happens after it negotiates with the server and finds the module so I know there is a connection.

 

As a sanity check I started fresh on my Mac OS 14 machine and I was able to get it working fine. Seems like something has changed between 14 and 15 and I have no idea what.
