Do we still need to use shortcuts app to have custom app icons?

Hi, I customized my phone’s apps years ago when widgets and all that emerged and it was very manual. Opening each app had a little banner that I trained myself to ignore but I’m wondering now, years later is there a go-around to this? Can I customize my app icons without going thru shortcuts?
