Zara Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Hey all, Please may someone help me? My year old netbook is running INCREDIBLY slow :( - internet pages take forever and opening files takes ages too. I have no idea where to start? I don't know how to begin to clean it up or find out what is wrong. I am going to run the malwarebytes and post what that tells me but i would really really appreciate some help. I also have an old Norton trial that I have been unable to delete. Even just typing this message has taken forever as the computer constantly freezes. I am not technically minded in the slightest. Many, many thanks in advance for any help. zara :) Quote
Zara Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 The TFC download took around 30 minutes and deleted 1923.00 mb I'm guessing this in itself may may my computer run faster, but I will still do the malware thing too :) Quote
Plastic Nev Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Hi Zara and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help. Run the Malwarebytes and then copy and paste the results here, direct from the notepad page that opens when it has finished, and we can go from there. If needed I or another staff member will alert security guys to come have a look. Glad to see you have taken advice from our notes by running the TFC and looking to run the Malwarebytes, as it does help us to help you. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted August 27, 2012 ExTS Admin Posted August 27, 2012 Hi again Zara, I also have an old Norton trial that I have been unable to delete. Get rid of this and get a decent AV that won't slow the system down. Norton may need a helping hand.............. To remove Norton Products: Go to: Norton Removal Tool Download it to your 'Desktop'. Then click on the desktop icon to run the removal tool. When complete, install your new AntiVirus program. Here's my recommendations for a good free AV program. Avira AntiVir Avast free MS Security Essentials ... see note* Install one of these, update the definitions and then run a full scan. Let it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove. Note*: Upon installation MS Security Essentials will check that your OS is a legal copy. Quote Member of:UNITE
Zara Posted September 15, 2012 Author Posted September 15, 2012 Many thanks for your help :). I managed to remove the norton and have mcafee at the moment so will look at removing that and choosing one of the others. It's seems faster since clearing all the temp files tho :) thanks again Quote
Plastic Nev Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Hi again, you should also see an improvement now Norton has gone and McAfee. Choose any of those Starbuck mentioned but only one. Part of your slow problems will have been due to both McAfee and Norton being there together. You should only ever have one antivirus, if more than one, each can conflict with the other and cause slow working or complete crashes. Do keep the Malwarebytes though as antispyware programs do not cause problems as they work in a different way altogether. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? snodge182 Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 I strongly recommend Avast. It is easy to understand and does what you'd expect one to do. The free version works perfectly fine. I also have a netbook with Windows Starter, it came with so many Toshiba already installed programs that are just annoying. I'm considering upgrading the Windows just because of how restrictive Windows starter is, I can't even change my wallpaper! Quote
