Will signing out of messages temporarily give me MacBook storage?

I have a MacBook Air with only 4GB of storage left, and my Messages app is taking up 30GB. I need around 26GB of free space to perform a software update.

 

If I sign out of Messages, will that free up the 30GB? Also, when I log back in, will all my messages, pictures, and videos be restored?
