IE tweak for more speed

Dear Ross,

I cannot really suggest any programs that will speed up Internet Explorer. From my experience, programs that claim to speed up your Internet connection simply don't. I can, however, suggest the following:

* Delete your temporary Internet files every couple of days. A full Temporary Internet Files folder will significantly reduce your browsing speed, as well as causing a few other problems

* On the Advanced tab of Internet Explorer's Options dialog, in the Multimedia section, uncheck anything you don't need IE to load on a Web page. For example, if you uncheck 'Play sounds in webpages', IE won't bother downloading them. This will speed things up, if only a little

Other than that I can't suggest anything else without more information from you...

What speed is your Internet connection? What is your hardware set-up? Do other programs run slowly or is it just IE? If you are using a wireless connection, are you maybe a bit too far away from the router?

If you like, you can e-mail me an export of your computer info, and answer the above questions. I'll make more suggestions if I spot anything that is likely negatively effecting your browsing speed.

IE tweak for more speed

I am looking for a good tweak that will speed up IE 6 for faster web surfing.

A quick search of Google turns up like a million sites - too many to look

over. If anyone knows of a good download that will speed up IE 6 please let

me know. Thanks.

Forget it, it's bloatware that will never be fast. Instead download and

use Firefox. When Firefox is started it restores your last session with

all the tabs you had open last time.

I can start Firefox and load 6 or 8 tabs with web sites faster than I

can load IE with just my home page.

Curious. How are you "loading" IE?

Terry, I am not sure what you are asking, but I click on the "E" on my

desktop and then IE "loads".

Re: IE tweak for more speed

well, we have no idea

what your current speed

is and perhaps you are

already as fast as can

be, but want to be "faster".

unfortunately, tweaking

the software you have now

won't surpass your current

threshold.

however, there is a quick

test you can try.

boot into safemode w/networking

and test run your web surfing.

if your websurfing in safemode

is faster than normal mode then

it is likely that programs are loading

and consuming some of your

bandwidth.

however, if there is no real

difference in safemode, then your

system is most likely optimal

for web surfing.

so the next step would be to

upgrade your internet connection

to a faster dsl speed.

The speed of Web surfing depends on the following factors:

1. speed of Internet connection

2. whether or not malware is on your PC

3. certain antimalware applications that may be problematic

4 the presence (or absence) of certain browser add-on toolbars

5. something in the broswer cache that may be interfering with

downloading data

6. performace in general of your PC, especially whether or not you have

enough RAM

7. amount of content that takes up a lot of bandwidth, such as ads,

Flash content, etc.

Sometimes a good Hosts file is all you need to speed up your browsing.

Other times you need to remove all malware infections. Other times, you

need to assess if you have too many programs running in the background

for the anount of RAM you have installed.

If you give us concrete information about your PC, we will be able to

give you much better advice. For starters, let us know the following:

*** Make/model of PC, amount of RAM, amount of free space left on your

hard drive, the last time you entered your browser cache.

Speaking of RAM, we need to know if you have enough (if you don't, you

will be relying too much on the pagefile). Open Task Manager

(Ctrl+Alt+Del) and click the Performance tab. Then note the three values

under Commit Charge (K): in the lower left-hand corner: Total, Limit,

and Peak.

The Total figure represents the amount of memory you are using at that

very moment. The Peak figure represents the highest amount of memory you

used since last bootup. If both these figures are below the value of

Physical Memory (K) Total, then you probably have plenty of RAM.

*** Malware status and how you determined it. Which antimalware apps do

you run?

*** Method of connecting to Internet and results from speed tests, such

as:

Heh, make that *cleared* your browser cache...

Run the Internet speed test at speedtest.net and make a note of the result

Next

Start registry editor by clicking on Start | Run

..

Click in the Open dropdown box and type in regedit.exe

Click OK .

Back up your registry by selecting File | Export type in a meaningful file

name, in the export range section select All and save to your hard drive. To

restore your old registry you simply import this file.

Next you need to create a new registry key.

On the left side you need to go to the directory

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

Select Edit | New | DWORD Value

Rename the new registry key to TcpWindowSize.

Modify the registry setting for TcpWindowSize by double clicking on the key.

Change the Base Setting to Decimal.

Enter the value 64240 and click OK, then exit RegEdit.

For these settings to take effect you need to close all your open

applications and reboot your system.

Run the speed test again and comare results

Good Luck

Firefox will give your cat warts.

If you don't have a cat, you'll probably be okay.

Well, if I did I wouldn't be loading IE with it would I??? I dual boot
