OS: Win XP Pro SP3

Browser: IE7

Just downloaded and installed Java jre-6u10-windows-i586-p-s.exe

The installation was successful.

1. In 'Add or Remove Program' panel are two (2) Java items listed viz:

Java 6 Update 10 (Size 96.89MB)

and

Java 6 Update 7 (size 114.00MB)

Is it okay to remove Java 6 Update 7 from the 'Add or Remove Program'

panel?

2. In C:\Program Files\Java are two (2) folders listed viz:

jre 1.6.0_07 and jre6

Is it okay to delete folder jre 1.6.0_07 ?

3. In 'Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer' are four (4) Java

ActiveX Control items listed viz:

a) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_07 File: jp2iexp.dll

b) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 File: jp2iexp.dll

c) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 File: jp2iexp.dll

d) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 File: npjpi160_10.dll

Items 'b' and 'c' are double entries.

Is it okay to delete items 'a' and 'b' ?

4. In'Add-ons that run without requiring permission' are seven (7) Java

ActiveX Control items listed viz:

a) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_07 File: jp2iexp.dll

b) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_07 File: jp2iexp.dll

c) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_07 File: jp2iexp.dll

d) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 File: jp2iexp.dll

e) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 File: jp2iexp.dll

f) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 File: jp2iexp.dll

g) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 File: jp2iexp.dll

Do I require the triple/quadruple entries?

Is it okay to delete items 'a' thru 'f' ?

5. In 'Downloaded ActiveX Controls (32-bit) are four (4) Java ActiveX

Control items listed viz:

a) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_07 File: jp2iexp.dll

b) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 File: jp2iexp.dll

c) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 File: jp2iexp.dll

d) Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 File: npjpi160_10.dll

Items 'b' and 'c' are double entries.

Is it okay to delete items 'a' and 'b' ?

TIA.

Yes, remove it and the ones below will also be removed. You should

always remove old Java installs when there's a new one.

Uninstall the older Java. Reboot. Delete the older Java's folder if it still

remains. If the add-ons (or anything else) referring to the older Java are

still there after the uninstallation, you should remove them.

Yes. Always ditch the old version for the new.

Thank you Alias, Malke and TCW.

I removed the old Java installation in 'Add or Remove Programs' window which

deleted the old folder as well. Now, since you haven't mentioned anything

about the multiple entries in IE7 (Manage Add-ons), I assume that this is

okay.

On a different issue, could anybody hazard a guess as to why 'Add or Remove

Programs' is listed twice in my 'Control Panel' ?

TIA.

The applet for Add/Remove programs is appwiz.cpl. Normally this is

found in the system path \Windows\System32. You might want to do

a full system search ( Hidden, System ) for appwiz.cpl. It's possible

your machine has a 2nd instance of the applet in another location.

It's possible that sloppy mouse work at one point caused an accidental

drag and drop of the Add/Remove icon which caused a copy process, and

now you have two...

Have you tried deleting one of them?

According to the article, earlier versions won't be removed ... yet:

It's nice that Sun has finally heeded the calls from its user base, but

since we don't have an Update 11 yet, it's hard to tell how well this

patch in place process will work. What's more, while Update 10 promises

to remove itself whenever Sun ships the next post-Update 10 release, it

doesn't remove any pre-Update 10 versions hanging around the user's system.

Yes! There were two (2) items in System32. I removed appwiz(2).cpl (Control

Panel extension 537KB) and after rebooting the second entry had disappeared.

Thanks.
