I recently have purchased a new motherboard, processor and RAM (see below for spec), and i also have a PSU that is only one year old. I plugged it all in last night and the motherboard powers on perfectly, the CPU fan spins away as does the graphics card fan. However there seems to be no power going to the SATA power cables as my Blu Ray drive won't power up. Also there is nothing showing on the monitor?? Any ideas??

Many Thanks

Nick

Hello and welcome.

Firstly check the both cables on the SATA hard drive are fully seated into there ports.

Double check all connections as one may not be plugged in correctly or came loose.

Sometimes computers do NOT like change of hardware.

Have you tried getting into BIOS and see if the HDD is listed in there?

On the post screen is your RAM and HDD listed?

Do you get any beeps other than the post beep?

Memory can be the cause of a balck screen, try resitting it.

Have you simply tried restarting the computer and repeatedly tap F8 key and choose last known good config?

Hi There,

Thanks so much for your reply. I have checked all of the connections multiple times, and the main issue is that my monitor doesn't even turn on to show me the bios setting or anything. I have tried the memory in a variety of combinations and still it isnt working. I was thinking about buying a PSU tester to check if there is power going through the SATA cables, but I have spent so much money on these new bits I really wanna try to refrain from spending any more. There is no speaker on my PC so not sure if there is a post beep or not.

Hi Nick and welcome to ExTS

You say you have a new motherboard .....

If you kept the old HDD have you used the original OS that was on the drive ?

If so - it will be unlikely to boot up.

Is this the case ?

Hi There,

Yes. How would I get it to boot up with the O/S on the drive?? I used 2 drives, one with the OS on it, and the other drive for storage. Would I need to have both plugged in?? It still concerns me a bit that the power doesn't seem to be going to the drives through the SATA though. I have never used forums before and I am so chuffed with the response!!

Thanks

Hi Nick

If this is Win7 - do you have the original installation disk ?

You should still get visual on the monitor.

Does the motherboard have an on-board connection to connect the monitor to?

If so - remove the video card and try the on-board.

I will need to check if the RAM is compatible - but for the time being ..........take it out and see what happens when you try to boot up.

Hi Ken,

I do have the disk somewhere. Yes the motherboard has an HDMI and a "DisplayPort" output which I have never seen before. There are no VGA or DVI outputs. I would really appreciate it if you could look into the memory side of things for me.

Thanks again

Hi Nick

Pull the RAM modules and then switch on.

Let me know if you have anything on the monitor.

If you have no HDMI > VGA adapter you will need to use the Video Card.

Hi Ken,

Shouldn't it work if I plug the motherboard directly into my TV via HDMI??

I will try this when I get back from work. I was told by a friend of mine that Asus boards don't tend to beep when they are turned on, instead they have a series of lights next to the 24 pin power plug that show up any errors. Have you heard of this before?? I will also check this when I get home.

Thanks

You may be lucky.

Some machines need their resolution settings and refresh rates set to the tv settings.

Not heard of the series of LEDs on Asus boards before - but that means nothing .......... it is a distinct possibility.

Synapse ( one of our mods ) may be able to answer this with more conviction :)

Let us know how you get on with pulling the RAM and the HDMI connection to TV

Hi,

I will let you know straight away what the outcome is. I have had an email back from Aria who I purchased the Motherboard, Processor and Memory from, and he said to try resetting the CMOS by taking the battery out on the board and also seeing if anything displays by just using the motherboard GPU memory and CPU.

Fingers crossed!!!!
