This appeared on my wife's computer (studio one 64 bit running Vista) some time ago. It doesn't respond to a left or right click from the mouse. Googling brings up an American company called Carbonite. They use padlocks of various colours to indicate the state of updated/grade of membership.

Having googled to remove it I find no carbonite folders/files on the computer.

Can you help in identifying this icon and its removal please?

Grey padlock in the notification area

It is almost invisible and is hidden because of the 'hide' facility. It is third from the RHS in the launch bar.

cheers

Hi Jim

Start .......type in ...msconfig ......ENTER

Click on "Startup"

Take a look down the list ..........most is not necessary and need not be checked.

See if there is anything there could relate to the icon.

if there is - uncheck it and Apply / OK

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi KenB and thanks for the reply. I have done as you said but found nothing in start-up that looks remotely like this padlock thing.

Logitech have a lock on the system but that is justifiable.

There is nothing else.

Hi Jim. I'll take a guess.

This might be part of the Dell Quickset software. Perhaps your NumLock. Try pressing the NumLock key on your keyboard.

That's great. It was your high resolution picture that gave me the clue. Not only did the icon look familiar but when I magnified the picture the number 9 was clearly visible. Glad we could you.
