Need Some help with harddrive issue.?

Hi,

 

Hopefully somebody can help me? My PC's harddrive (38gb) is full there's no space what so ever I can't even restore my iPhone :/ I just installed a slave drive which is 278gb but annoyingly my pc is still very slow & I still can't restore my iPhone as iTunes tries extracting the file to c: drive. My question is can I copy everything from my master to slave drive & just replace the 38gb for the bigger one? I don't have a winxp disc so I can't re- install a new drive from scratch.

The answer is yes - but probably not the way you envisage doing it. :)

 

I suggest that you format the "Slave" drive before you start.

 

What I suggest is that you create an image of your master HDD.

( you can do this using DVDs or another external drive )

 

Then put your "Slave" drive in place of the "Master" and re-install the image that you created to the formatted drive.

The free software has been updated but, according to Starbuck ( moderator ) the tutorial is still OK to follow as he has recently used it.

 

( This will copy everything on the drive - even malware so you may wish to run some scans first :) )

Hello,

 

Going to start soon hopefully, Need to know before I start if I use DVDs to image my HDD later on when I need to boot Linux from a bootable disc how do I install the image? I dont have two CD trays & if I take out the bootable disc not sure what's going to happen.

That is a problem. You need the Linux OS to run from disk.

I might be able to. What size will the image be ? Say I image 35gb of data will It be 35gb on DVDr/external HDD or smaller.

If your drive is showing 35 Gb used then you will need at least 40Gb of external drive space.

Hi, and welcome from me too.

 

I have done quite a lot with the Macrium free version, so had a good think about this and to be quite honest I cannot see a way round without a third hard drive, preferably external of course.

 

One thing I will say though is to recommend that you download the full Windows PE and burn that to disk rather than risking all on the Linux disk. I found the Linux could not find my external hard drive when I was using it. (Macrium does warn it cannot work with some hardware, in my case my external drive)

Downloading that Windows PE file even with a moderately fast connection can take time though, and it took nearly two hours for me. Well worth the wait in the end I think.

 

If for example you intended -

 

A, keeping the now slave as a slave for backup and extra storage.

 

B, once an image has been created of your small drive, remove it and install a new bigger drive.

 

Then it would be possible to create the image of the small 38GB drive and put it on the new slave drive.

Remove the old small drive and install whatever sized larger drive, but still keeping the slave as a slave.

 

The image then could be taken off the slave and installed as a full system onto the new drive.

 

The Windows PE disk will certainly handle doing all that where the Linux, I am doubtful about, due as I say to not getting it to work for me.

 

If you don't want to go buying another drive though, then the only way I can see is to borrow an external drive from a friend to use as a temporary carrier for the image.

If you have not already solved your problem there is a simple way to get more space on your harddrive.

 

On your new drive create a folder called (e.g. ) Documents 2012

 

On the Desktop, right click the documents folder and select Properties.

 

The location of your documents will be highlighted. Change this to the new folder you have set up and select move.

 

All your documents will now be moved to the new drive, leaving you with a lot of space on C drive.

 

The documents link will still be there , but all new documents will go to the new folder.
