crl Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Hi - I have two issues, which may or may not be linked. I am using a 2 year old PC running Win7. 1) My internet explorer keeps crashing ("IE has stopped working") and restarting itself. How can I stop this happening? 2) Working wirelessly at home, it keeps disconnecting - am working with ethernet today, with no issues (other than (1) above). Is this my PC or just how far I am away from the router in my house? It may just be that my machine is old, but advice welcomed please! Thanks in advance Quote
KenB Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS It is definitely not due to an "old" machine. - I am using a 5 year old laptop at the moment and have no problems at all. am working with ethernet today, I assume this is a cable connection you are using ? Let's take a look at IE first ( the wireless problem will have more possible options ) Start > Control Panel ( you may need to switch to "Category" view) > Internet Options > Advanced > click Reset Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! crl Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 Thanks for the advice. Yes, cabled today! Have reset IE as suggested - will monitor and advise if resolved! Quote
crl Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 Actually, when I hit "reply", IE stopped working again!!! Same error! Quote
KenB Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Hi, Try running IE in safe mode. Start > type in .....internet explorer ...........(do not hit enter) Top left of screen you should see "Internet Explorer-no add ons" ................click on this. Also - try running Firefox instead. (you can have more than one browser on your system) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! crl Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 Thanks (again). Now running without add-ons. Will see what happens! I like IE and don't really like Firefox - so will see what happens......cheers Quote
crl Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 Nope - still falling over - IE not working...... :( Quote
KenB Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 When IE crashes ....... bottom right of screen there is an icon that looks like 2 monitors. Point the screen curser at this. Does it say "Access: Local and Internet" Does the same happen with F-F ? Did you upgrade to IE9 from IE8 ? If so IE9 may show in Control Panel > Programs and Features Try highlighting it and select "Repair" if this is an option. crl Posted September 4, 2012 Author Posted September 4, 2012 Will check next time (if) it happens - thanks I really dislike FF, so haven't tried! IE9 not showing in Programs & Features, so can't repair :( Thanks Quote
crl Posted September 4, 2012 Author Posted September 4, 2012 Happened again just now. Icon at bottom in system tray says "Internet access" - does this help? Thanks Quote
KenB Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 does this help Yes - it confirms that it is a problem with IE and not related to the connection dropping out. Try this Auto-Fix http://support.microsoft.com/mats/ie_performance_and_safety/en-us (hopefully it is compatible with IE9 .....) crl Posted September 4, 2012 Author Posted September 4, 2012 Seems compatible - well, it ran okay anyway!!! Will let you know if it has resolved! Thank you again Quote
crl Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 :( Just happened again. Oh dear......... Quote
KenB Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 I know you are attached to IE but try this one - just to see if it crashes too. http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php I use it and like it a lot. It is good to have an alternative browser ............just in case :) Was IE9 on your system when you bought it ? Try the following: Start ....type in ......cmd .....( do not hit Enter ) Right click on cmd.exe that shows top left of screen Click on Run as Administrator At the prompt type in .......sfc /scannow ...... ENTER This will check the system files. IE is an integral part of Windows. You may be prompted for the installation disk. If you don't have one run the sfc anyway. crl Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 Ran and no violations found........ Will steel myself and may look at FF or the one you suggested! Quote
benstiller Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Your IE crashes due to the in-compatibility of the hardware & the IE. Where your system does not have sufficient virtual memory to run the IE. Your WiFi problem is because of two reasons one you’re going out of range and other reason is your wireless adapter might be a g/b and your router might a n. Quote
KenB Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 benstiller Your IE crashes due to the in-compatibility of the hardware & the IE. Where your system does not have sufficient virtual memory to run the IE. You sound very definite on the points you have made. 1. How do you know that crl's hardware is incompatible with IE ? 2. Could you explain in a little more detail how IE is linked to Virtual Memory ? Bear in mind that this system is running Win7 and will probably have at least 4GB RAM - it may have been prudent to ask. I have removed the external link from your signature - they are not allowed here. crl Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 Using FF - seems okay:) Was working wirelessly in Manchester (ie not on my usual home wireless) and it fell off the wireless several times today. It said there were no connections available when there clearly were....... hmm.........any thoughts? Quote
KenB Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 It could be linked with your wireless adapter. Get a stable connection - Use F-F if this is running OK we don't want it to drop out. Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click the + next to Network Adapters and your wireless adapter should be listed ( it will say something like WiFi Link ...... ) What does it say is listed ? [let me know if there are any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ) Right click on the wireless adapter > Update Driver Software Use the automatic option ( you will need internet access ) Let me know the results. crl Posted September 8, 2012 Author Posted September 8, 2012 Oh dear.... this morning, wireless falling off - have moved PC to ethernet wired again, and is working fine. Pity - it was all going so well until today!!!! Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 First when it comes to networking (and most other issues) I bow to Kenb's expertise, However there is one thing that no forum can really do and that is actually look at your hardware. I am curious about your configuration. I know you have a router but is it a modem/router or a router connected to a modem? It may well be that one or the other is just failing or it may be the wireless card in the computer that is creating a hardware issue. If you have both a modem and a router as two separate bits of hardware which one are you using to connect using your ethernet cable? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
