VSS Fails / vssadmin list writers shows no writers

[Guest richlich]

Windows Server 2003 x64 with latest patches and SP.

 

VSS service will not start. Gives "file not found" in System log. ImagePath

in registry is correct and vssvc.exe is in the path (%SystemRoot%\system32)

shown in the registry.

 

Running vssadmin list writers doesn't show any writers.

 

Please help as this is affecting our ability to back up or Exchange 2007

mailstores and the System State on this server.

Do you have the VSS roll-up installed already?

Don't know. Checking. (New here.) I'm betting that unless it was in WSUS, it

probably hasn't been applied.

That's what I had guessed. Well, I downloaded the roll-up and told my boss

about it. He's supposed to get this fixed before our month-end backups this

weekend. We'll see what happens in the next day or two. I'll be back,

probably on Monday, with and update.

Great, let me know how it goes. By the way, the only other post-VSS

rollup hotfixes are the following.

If the VSS roll-up doesn't help, grab and apply the others as well. It

won't hurt anything and may rule out VSS as causing you the headache.
