Hi and welcome to ExTS

This could prove to be awkward as we are unaware of what they have done.

I assume that you do have an ISP - who are they ?

[this would be a monthly subscription]

How are you trying to set up the laptop ? (assuming it is a laptop )

broadband via a router ?

wired ?

wireless ?

or dialup ?

[this is free to connect but you pay for the length of time you use it]

I have given some thought as to whether or not to supply an answer to you simply because we can never be sure how you came upon this computer. I am going to give you an answer because it appears that the computer is not password protected which is the first thing that someone would do ot protect against theft or unlawful access. Further I am only giving you what would be considered the basics. If what I am suggesting does not work you may have to go back to the school as someone there must have the original instructions.

Find your network adapters either from your control panel or by clicking on the small network icons in your taskbar near the clock. I can't be more specific than that because I do not have an XP machine up and running ight now but this should be easy to find.

When you find them you need to right click and select "properties."

IN the "General" tab you will see "Internet Protocol [TCP/IP] open that up. If there are a seies of ip adresses (a series of numbers separated by dots) then you need to select "Obtain IP address Automatically" do that both on the first and second set of numbers. The numbers should now be greyed out. Save your settings and exit. Do that for both wireless and LAN adapters.

Once that is done you should be able to connect to your sky ISP by entering your security key if wireless or by connecting by way of ethernet cable. If none of that works it may well be that the school has added additional protection and we cannot (or will not) help you get around something like that unless ok'd by an Administrator which is doubtful.

To add to the advice so far, if this computer was one of a batch, and all given away to other children from this same school, the parents of those children will also have been given the same instructions that you have lost. Hopefully at least one of them will have kept those instructions so why not ask around?

thanks for the reply lads yea il try the instructions that you have told me see if that works its just that the school have changed something on the pc so that i wont be able to use any other isp so that it would be strictly filtered for example when it was running through the school internet i couldn't even go on facebook there page would pop up saying that not authorized to go on this. I already tried asking other parents they said it was on the school website on how to do it but its no longer available Nev

My guess is that they set it up with a static IP which would limit access except through their server which was very filtered. My instructions should cure that. However if they had some way of locking that IP so you could not change it we would still be limited as to how much help we can provide.

Have you tried what I suggested first? Restoring to factory settings may or may not work depending on how sophisticated the original set up was done.

Up to this point we have taken your word on how you got the computer and still do not doubt that word. However, I have worked on the assumption that the school was simply filtering the use of the internet.

If this was more sophisticated then you may not even be able to perform a factory restore. If the computer came with disks for a restore then you can try them. Otherwise it was done using a recovery partition from the factory which would be on your hard drive. However there are a number of "tricks" that can be done in the bios that would keep you from doing a restore and the bios itself may be password protected so you cannot make any changes.

Hi,

I taught in schools for over 30 years in the Birmingham area of UK. ( Now retired to Wirral )

Let me have the name and phone number of the school and I will see about contacting them regarding this scheme where pupils are given PCs to keep for their own use.

They MUST still have an IT technician / manager on site ( my school has 3 ).

They will be able to let us know how they set up each machine.

I may know somebody who works there :)

Please reply to Kens request:

If no reply in 24 hours i will close this thread.

If you are legit, you will have no problem with the request.

If you are not!! (which is what i suspect) ... you had better not return.

Hi

You understand - we have to be very careful providing help here ..........we have to make judgements based on what is written.

for instance:

You wrote in your first post...

my kid was given a pc from this scheme they had from school

you then wrote....

when it was running through the school internet i couldn't even go on facebook

My kid .....implies you are the parent

I couldn't ......facebook ........implies you are the student at the school.

You also say it is a desktop.

How can you carry a desktop to school and back ?

I know it is frustrating for you ..........but we have to be careful.

I still think that contacting the school direct would solve this.

Do you want me to do it ?

If so let me have the number.

Ken i understand exactly what you mean buddy and its good that you are being very cautious in this thread this was a scheme from aston pride but they chose the kids from school who were eligible to the itc computers for home project were they provided a desktop pc with secure broadband for £10 per month but for some reason the broadband connection didnt last very long so they told us that we could keep the computer and subscribe to our own isp they also gave me a link on how to change the configuration but as i didnt have any subscription for any company at that time i dint bother with it now that link is no longer available and when i did contact them they said that i have to get a computer engineer out myself to sort the problem out if you can contact them for me that would be great the number is 0121 303 5671 thanks for your help ken

Hi again

I am getting a fuller picture now.

Was the machine kept at home and not in school ?

Did the Aston scheme set the machine up or was it the school ?

Did any of your kid's friends get one - just thinking that they may be able to remember what changes they made.

Hi,

I have contacted The Aston Charity and it seems that they ceased to function after March 12th

The lady I contacted informed me that the broadband scheme was extended for 6 months - taking it into September.

You should still have a connection - according to her - unless you stopped the payments.

( This isn't our business )

OK. Let's see if we can help.

You are using Sky broadband - is this right ?

How are you trying to connect the desktop to the router ( wired or wireless ? )

Which Operating System is on the machine ( Win7 / Vista ) ?

Presumably you are using a computer on the home connection now and it is OK ?

Have you checked the TCP/IP settings as I mentioned above? Have you looked for proxy settings in your browser? How many browsers are on the computer?

BeeCeeBee has suggested twice that you check the following:

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections

You should see the Wireless Connection

Right Click on this > Properties > Highlight Internet Protocol by single click on this > click Properties tab that is underneath

"Obtain IP Address ....." and "Obtain DNS Address ...." should be set to automatic.

If they have any numbers in the boxes put a check against .......Obtain an IP Address ............Obtain DNS server .....

Then click OK

Try connection.

Can we gather the IP information together, so we can see exactly what we have?

It is worth connecting to the router with a cable as well as wireless if you can.

Open a command prompt and go through the following..

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /renew

and lastly

ipconfig /all >Desktop\Ipconfig.txt

That will clear any dns junk out, and renew your ip. Please post any error message you receive - you shouldn't receive any.

The last command will place a text file on your desktop containing all of the current ip information, please post it for us to have a look at. Also, if you can please run the last command whilst connected to wireless, and then connected with an ethernet cable. Post both.
