snodge182 Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Hi, A while back I was dating a girl, she had a laptop with windows xp on it and i had a laptop with windows xp on it. Her step dad often helped her fix her laptop. He had her laptop so that there was only one account on it which wasn't even an administrator but he was the administrator for it from another computer. They shared the same network, although his was ethernet and hers was through wireless wifi. I have a computer and my laptop and I was wondering how I could have it so that my computer was the administrator for my laptop like he was with her laptop. I have looked all over the internet but can't understand any of this stuff. Please help me and please try to make it more understandable for me, i'm not very good with computers etc. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 This is one of those topics that causes me to step back and ask why? Are you trying to remove all administrator privileges and just have one machine controlled only by the other machine? If both these machines are yours why would you want to do that? Maybe I am looking at it wrong but I am hesitant to suggest a solution but perhaps a staff member here will see it differently. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
KenB Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 I am thinking along the same lines BeeCeeBee. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
RandyL Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 For one thing you can't. There will always be one Administrator account in Vista or 7. For another thing you're not going to be able to change security policy settings in the home premium version of 7 to do what you want across a domain. It doesn't exist in home premium 7. KenB Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 Thinking again .............could you be talking about remote access ? Being able to control one computer from another even if you are in a different location. snodge182 Posted September 10, 2012 Author Posted September 10, 2012 (edited) The laptop i am trying to remotely administrate is windows xp, the computer i'm trying to administrate it from has a choice of either windows 7 or windows xp... I'm not sure if thats what happened between them but all I remember is seeing that her little netbook had only one user on it and it wasn't an administrator and that her step dad was the administrator from another computer. BeeCeeBee Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 (edited) Just because this thread interests me I am going to add my 2 cents (pence): I have no problem with someone who wants to be able to administer a PC remotely. I can also figure out how what you have described must have been done. HOWEVER I don't think that you were seeing the whole picture and are assuming that the step dad's control was exclusive to only him or that the only means of administrating that machine is through the other computer. What I find troubling is that you want to create administrative rights over another computer that you "own" so that not even you can act as an administrator on that machine. If you don't see how fishy this looks then I guess you have never seen a fish. Edited September 10, 2012 by BeeCeeBee Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Starbuck Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 (edited) You have asked this question before: http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/14032-How-to-create-a-network-remote-administrator?p=90883#post90883 Exact same wording.... why?? I have a computer and my laptop and I was wondering how I could have it so that my computer was the administrator for my laptop like he was with her laptop. Do you even understand what you are asking here? Edited September 10, 2012 by Starbuck Quote Member of:UNITE
snodge182 Posted September 19, 2012 Author Posted September 19, 2012 (edited) I am asking how, and want to do it with my own laptop/computer firstly because I want to see for myself what he was able to do (see us on our webcams, see what websites we were doing etc) and secondly for the development of computer knowledge that I have, for example if my dad asked me to set up a network for his office with this included or such like then I would have a bit of experience behind me. I can see why this seems fishy and can safely say that I am not malicious or anything like that. Also, could it be possible that she only had the one user showing up on her netbook because he had hidden the administrator for her netbook somehow? Edited September 19, 2012 by snodge182 Quote
snodge182 Posted September 19, 2012 Author Posted September 19, 2012 I have posted it before yes, but if you noticed, there aren't any replies at all. I figured if I delete that one and re post, then it would be like refreshing it. The only thing is the other one didn't delete so I'll try deleting it again now. Quote
Synapse Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 Going back to your first post I have looked all over the internet but can't understand any of this stuff. Any messing about with Admin accounts, that is the REAL administrator of any PC could render it useless. The fact that you have said you don't understand means to me that you ought not be doing it. My advice is to learn about what admin accounts are for on the various versions of Windows, and make sure you can always get out of any mess you get yourself in, because you will :). Then take a step forward using the many guides there are out there to tinker with your systems. For remote access tasks, and that could include virus removal, running in Safe Mode, or just because you can, have a look at Logmein and Teamviewer. Quote
KenB Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 have a look at Logmein and Teamviewer. I have used / still have Logmein. I have had it a while - I think you only get a trial version now ...........pay after 2 weeks or so. I accessed my computer in UK from Atlanta USA. The home computer has to be on with internet access and logmein software running. Once in - you have full access to software and settings. snodge182 Posted September 20, 2012 Author Posted September 20, 2012 I don't mind messing around with admin stuff on my laptop especially because it has nothing of use on it and I can just easily restore it from backed up hard drives etc. This logmein thing looks like it isn't discrete, however my ex's stepdad left no trace on her laptop that he was the admin other than telling her himself. Is logmein the software that can do that? Quote
KenB Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Logmein is a piece of software that you install on the host computer. You can the access that computer from any other computer - anywhere. You need your email address and a password to do so. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Synapse Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 This logmein thing looks like it isn't discrete And there lies the problem. Just a little more about Logmein, any computer once setup can be accessed, the remote computer is notified that a admin user is logging on and can prevent that happening. In my opinion, there is no way a legit forum will tell you how to discretely log on to another persons machine - why would any forum do that? Quote

snodge182 Posted September 21, 2012 Author Posted September 21, 2012 (edited) Actually yeah that makes perfect sense, I wasn't intending on using it harmfully/maliciously but yeah I can understand. Thank you for all your help so far guys. Maybe one last thing though, if he was to discretely log on to her laptop could he view live feed such as both our webcams or her watching youtube videos, without us knowing? RandyL Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 I am failing to understand many points of this thread. Your original thread title is "How to create a remote network administrator??". We answered that you can't with your OS without third party software which requires permission. Through out this thread it is apparent that you want to do so withought anyone knowing you have Administrator priviledges over another machine. As Synapse pointed out we will not offer ANY advice if we think that is the intention. These machines or not set up on a server such as what you would find in a business environment so there is really no point in doing ANYTHING like you want to do. Even attempting to do so would result in disaterous results unless done so by a trained IT tech. Your last post indicates that you are still intent on doing so and want to know exactly how much you can do and wish to glean knowledge on how to do it. Normally we would offer warning advice on what some things can do in order for someone to protect themselves. However in this case I feel we would be helping to do the opposite. Instead we would be helping you spy or take over another computer without their knowledge. We are not about to help you do exactly what we strive to do which is help protect people from what you want to do. Although in the context of your last post it seems to be just a straight forward question about security I don't believe it is. In the context of the entire thread it just seems you want to know how much spying you can actually do and hope to gain some insight by our answers. As Synapse pointed out no reputable forum would help with this. That includes us. You may protest but I think it's clear to everyone. Quote We are all members helping other members. snodge182 Posted September 21, 2012 Author Posted September 21, 2012 OK, I understand all your points, but seriously even if you don't believe it I'm not a spy. If I were then I wouldn't be asking straight out like this with a story, I'd be studying computer books instead as I wouldn't like to be seen as anything to do with a hacker. Obviously this has escalated to a point where everyone thinks I'm a wannabe hacker no matter how I try and describe the predicament. I don't get along with the girl anymore but I think I should warn her if her step dad still has access over her computer that she doesn't know about because she could end up showing him more than he should see. I can completely understand how you think I am a hacker though so fair enough and again, fair point I wouldn't like for information on how to hack a computer to be broadcasted on the internet for other people to see. I just didn't realise until the last few posts that actually its what hackers do. My intentions were truly honest I promise you, but as I said I don't want anyone to help now because it is a form of hacking, of which I am completely against. In the beginning of this forum I didn't understand that it was hacking because I just purely painted out the scenario to you of my predicament, not thinking much about its context. Again thank you for the replies etc, but I now understand and do not want to carry this on further, even if it is my own computers, I would prefer not to involve myself with hacking, I just urged myself to investigate how private our camera sessions, file transfers etc were with her step dad being the remote admin. I leave it as they weren't very private at all, and so I shall warn her and put no more effort into finding out for myself, I'm a "have to see it to believe it" sort of person but on this occasion I would just believe it now, as I don't want anything to do with hacking. Sorry if this forum has brought up any reason to believe that I am untruthful. Snodge182. Quote
KenB Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Hi I am sure that you appreciate our position and I thank you for being so understanding. As we have explained - there is software freely available to allow access to another machine and you may wish to let your ex. know. It is a simple matter of removing the software from her machine if her step-dad has access this way. I think it best all round if this thread is now closed. Synapse Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Just one last thing Ken before we close it... I just urged myself to investigate how private our camera sessions, file transfers etc were with her step dad being the remote admin. I wondered about this myself, but wasn't sure I ought to broach it on the forum. My advice is that if you think there is a problem, suggest she finds someone to reinstall Windows on her machine and then password protect it. Quote
