KenB Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Yes Sue - very well thank you :) Let us know how you get on with that software - I have not used it personally. Suggest that you use it on a drive that you are not too bothered about first. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! suew203 Posted September 21, 2012 Author Posted September 21, 2012 Hi again Ken, I'm not sure if I perhaps explained myself clearly with my question about the flash drive, and I thought I had better clarify it. I have put all the family tree information on the USB Flash Drive. It is now going to be given to the person who it belongs to. How do I save all my hard work & data on the flash drive, so that it is not removed by its new owner by mistake? Or do I just follow the instructions you very kindly provided the other day? Thank you very much for all your help Kind Regards Sue :) Quote
KenB Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Hi Sue so that it is not removed by its new owner by mistake? That is different. I don't think it can be done with a flash drive. What you can do is right click on the file > Properties and put a check against "Read Only" This will prevent the file from being written to. If you save it to CD this is a better way of securing the data. There should always be 2 or 3 copies of important data. TrueCrypt will prevent others accessing the flash drive but once accessed the file could still be deleted. suew203 Posted September 21, 2012 Author Posted September 21, 2012 Cheers Ken, think the Read Only will be my best option, will try it out now on a test flash drive Thanks Sue  Quote
KenB Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Hi Sue With Read Only checked it is still possible to delete the file :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

Plastic Nev Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 As Ken mentioned, write once only DVD disks can be an answer to prevent accidental deletion or alteration. Another but slightly lower form of protection is any SD card, as these do have a write protection switch on the side which when switched to the lock position they can only be read. It does of course mean having a card reader/writer, though most newer computers have them built in. A physical locking switch such as this is something USB flash drives could do with having, but a search hasn't turned one one up that does for me. High capacity SD cards are now widely available and don't cost too much either. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help.
