saxo02 Posted September 28, 2012 Author Posted September 28, 2012 Hi guys. Still stuck on what to do here. Do you think it would be worth me getting a new screen? If so could someone point me to the right screen I need. Thanks again Quote
Vr5fx Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Hmmm, I have been reading this one but not posted yet. Have you tried restoring the laptop to factory settings? You could buy a new screen from Ebay, and see if this solves your problem, but if it doesn't cure anything then it would be £45-£60 possibly wasted. If a new screen doesn't work then the LCD cable may be damaged or the GPU is at fault, which also fits nearly all symptoms your having. If it is the GPU then it isn't really repairable. Another last thing to try is to strip it back down and pay attention to all the contacts between the motherboard and the screen. Make sure that all of them are clean and undamaged. What happened to the old screen? Do you still have it? -Vr Quote AMD FX 6100 @ 3.9Ghz / Asus M5A99X EVO 990X / G-Skill 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX / Zotac GeForce GTX 660 Ti / Corsair TX 750W V2 PSU / Antec Kuhler 620 / Win7 64 / NZXT Tempest 410 Elite / NZXT 6 channel fan controller / Kingston 240GB HyperX 3K SSD / 1TB HDD Intel Pentium G2020 2.90GHz / Gigabyte GA-Z77N-WIFI / Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600MHz HyperX Genesis / Corsair 430W CXM / Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX Case / 2TB WD Greenhttp://steamsignature.com/status/default/76561197986113115.png
Synapse Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Following on from Vr5fx, I guess I would work out the value of the machine before committing to a new screen. Also, we need to be sure of the screen type before pointing you in the right direction. Give Dell a call, find out which resolution screen is fitted. Quote

Plastic Nev Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Hi guys is there anyway of finding out whether the gpu is broke?anyway of testing it etc. thanks First thing to say is I don't think there is anything wrong with the GPU, as you said much earlier the laptop works OK through an external monitor, if that is true of all functions after full boot up, it must be OK as the external monitor would show the same problems. As far as something that can be done at home to double check the GPU, I am afraid the only way is with a different and known to be working screen of the same type or at least correct type for that machine, this is only something Dell can tell you from the ticket or service tag number for it. Repair specialists may have the fancy but expensive test equipment, but of course may charge a fee for doing so. If it does turn out to be the GPU, on laptops it is a part of the main or mother board and would require a new mother board. Not worth doing on an older laptop as the costs wouldn't be far off that for a new laptop, but as I say I doubt it is the GPU anyway. I would take the advice in Synapse's last post, number 27, have a serious look at whether it is worth buying a new screen, or perhaps adding the extra and buy a new laptop, but do get in touch with Dell, and find out which screen model it should be before going further. Synapse Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Find out exactly what spec machine you have - a quick call to Dell tech support will do it. We need to know what spec panel you should have. Quote

Synapse Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Ok, well......those extra numbers mean very little to me, and Google doesn't help either - normally a part number will come up pretty quickly. So, what now? Well I was examining the picture you have of the new screen, part number B173RW01 V3, H/W V5A, F/W V1. There are different versions of this screen, I've seen it said that this version is for HP only, but I can't be sure at the moment. There is a B173RW01 V0, with a different hardware version, and so it goes on. Look on ebay for a Dell 1750 screen, or search for the part number and the V0 is often listed. I've emailed a couple of sellers to check part numbers so hopefully one of them will get back to me. As soon as they do, I'll post the info. Quote
Synapse Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Dead end I'm afraid, according to the sellers, both versions of the screen work in the Dell. I'm stuck with this one, if it was mine, I'd risk another panel based on the price of them, and the laptop current market value. I say that because you don't know the source of the panel you have. I don't think the VGA chip is goosed as you can use it on an external monitor. The only other possibility I can think of is a faulty data cable from the panel to the board. The numbers n7004n mean nothing, I can't find any reference to them. Quote

Synapse Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 (edited) Here are a couple of links, both suppliers I have used quite a lot in the past, so I am happy to recommend them. Do email them first, with the model and Dell Service Tag info to make sure it is the correct panel - if they send the wrong one for example you will be able to remind them that you did check first. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/17-3-LED-BL-Screen-for-Dell-Inspiron-17-1750-P574N-0R231N-1764-/160842651363?pt=UK_Computing_Laptop_Screens_LCD_Panels&hash=item2572f816e3 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-17-3-LAPTOP-LCD-SCREEN-FOR-DELL-INSPIRON-1750-/230394173407?pt=UK_Computing_Laptop_Screens_LCD_Panels&hash=item35a49017df The cable, I found one in the link below, there are a few listed on ebay - again check the part number of the one you have to cross reference. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-DELL-Inspiron-1750-17-3-LED-LCD-SCREEN-CABLE-Model-50-4CN05-101-/251160958511?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item3a7a5c162f Edited November 23, 2012 by Synapse Quote
