Hi,

My computer has returned with a new speaker set;) It came back with factory settings so it's time to set up again.

Problem 1: Changing the router name and password Cisco EPC 3925

I've connected using a cable for this. I have got as far as deleting to default settings (indented button on the back) - entering my default IP number - clicking on log-in without any entered name or password (default function) that took me to the management/set-up panels - made a cup of tea (thinking aid).

Step 2: Change username and password.

I entered an new username and the new password twice. Firstly, the passwords I entered ( 12 characters:confused:) were rejected with a message on a new window saying that there is an error, without any details.

Secondly, after repeated attempts to have a password accepted, on pressing save changes the name change remains but the password boxes return to blank, with the recommendation to change my password remaining just below.

The sound is back on my notebook and Google Chrome has a function of saving your bookmarks I discovered when I downloaded it back onto my notebook and logged-in. Everything else has been re-downloaded or is Dropbox. ;)

Thanks for the advice to PC Forum.

Did you get a set-up CD with this router ?

The manual for the router is here: ( may need it later )

Change router name and password?

Hi KenB,

Yes, I have the cd. I've run the cd to re-connect to my router. It asked for a log-in name and security key number or simply press a button on the back of the router that I did. I did this on a remote setting i.e., without the cable connection to the router.

The log-in name and security key number can be found on the back of the router, also once I'd pressed the button on the back, I could click off the hide characters control and read them.

I couldn't find an option to change my username or password from here so I searched out my IP gateway number from cmd:confused:, pressed the other button on the back of the router (the one that is not raised above the surface i.e., you need to poke something in to access it), opened up a browser, typed the IP number in the url domain. I simply clicked log-in without entering anything into the name and password box as this is possible with default settings. I got through to 'Change Username and password', I could reach this from set-up or administration and typed in a new username and the chosen new password. I got two responses; one stating that there was some domain error:confused:, the other was the typed in passwords in the boxes simply returning to blank boxes when I clicked save settings.

Thanks for the manual. I'd already looked through it but couldn't find much on password reset or anything about the permitted characters or length of the password. Could it be possible that because I made several attempts to reset my password I got a time out.

Hi Rosmon

the one that is not raised above the surface i.e., you need to poke something in to access it

If this is what I think it is ......you have reset the Router to default settings ( out of the box ).

typed the IP number

Is this the 192.168.0.1 to get to the router software ?

If you are using the CD to set up your connection I think the username and password asked for will be the one provided by your ISP

not the one on the router - unless it is the access to the router software password and username.

Who is your Internet Provider ?

With your wired connection:

Start ......type in .....cmd ......do not hit ENTER

Right click on cmd.exe that appears top left of screen > Run as Administrator

When the prompt appears type in ....

ipconfig /all ( there is a space after ipconfig ) ......hit ENTER

Top left of this screen is a small black icon .......right click on this.

Highlight EDIT > Select All

Right click on the icon again > EDIT > COPY

Paste it here in your next reply.

Hi Rosmon

As you are concerned about the data provided - I have made the previous post invisible to all except forum staff :)

I think I have gone off at a tangent here .....

Do you have access to the internet via your Wireless connection ?

If you go into the router using the 192.168.0.1 method and look for this page:

You should be able to change the username and password there.

You would need to click on "Save Settings"

Change router name and password.

Hi KenB,

Thanks for securing the info.

Yes, I have wireless connection.

My new user name and password had been recognized and is how I get into my router management area, but this is bizarre as there was no acknowledgement from the software that the changes had been accepted; the boxes just blanked out after I'd typed the password into them and clicked save changes, with a red message recommending that I changed these setting remaining there too: funny way of confirming an action has been accepted, but it accepted the new settings a short while ago when I logged-in (I don't even know why I thought to try them) . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:confused:.

So I can get into my IP set-up and admin. but why is my computer or router not showing a new user name when I click on the bottom right icon and view the available connections running in my area: of course these are not my connections. But does this mean that my computer is still vulnerable to an unauthorized user to hack into and use my router?

The other number from my router is classed as the pre-shared key:confused:

I'm not sure what I've changed. It seems that I've only changed my log-in to the router panels. If I want to get more use out of my router to connect to my phone, do I need a different user name and password? And how would I do this?

Look forward to your reply,

The username that you changed was the login name to get into the router software.

The name that you see when you click on the icon in the bottom right is the SSID ( Service Set Identifier )

This is the name of your Wireless Network - it is broadcast by your router.

The names of other networks that you can see ( your neighbours ) are their SSID being broadcast by their routers.

It is possible to change the SSID - but this will not make the router any more secure.

does this mean that my computer is still vulnerable

No.

If, when you connect to the network for the first time, you are asked for a Network Key ( password if you like ) then your network is secure.

The time to worry is if the network shows as "Unsecured" - then we need to do something about it.

If I want to get more use out of my router to connect to my phone, do I need a different user name and password?

No - not at all.

The username and password that you have changed is the one that gives you access to the router settings - nothing else.

I hope this clears things up for you ?

I'll get Paypal soon so I can send a donation, or is there another way as I don't really want Paypal as it's just another username and password to remember to remember and to change.:p

Hi Rosman, thanks for considering a donation to us, you don't actually need to have a paypal account to donate, just click the donate button on the top of the index page, this takes you to the donation page where you can select how much, then click the "Proceed to Paypal.com" button, on the secure page that opens then, it tells you there that you can donate as a paypal guest using a credit or debit card. Hope that helps.

Hi Rosmon

Good to hear that you managed to change the router username and password.

Sorry for the mix-up in the earlier posts - I thought for some reason it was a connection problem :)

Good Luck :)
