Hi My wife's laptop which is running vista Business when you switch it on and she opens her account it comes up welcome and stays there. I can get on it in safe mode but it wont run the anti virus and I cant seem to find anything wrong. I had changed the antivirus (avg 2012 Free) the other day it could be for that. Can any one help?

Hi mercycle.

At least safemode is working. That's good. Safemode only loads the bare essentials for Windows to run. It doesn't load software that's been added usually. Although some programs can be used in safemode if called upon.

As such AVG won't be started in safemode. Since you just changed to AVG this may indeed be the problem. I've seen AVG cause a lot of problems on some computers.

You could try disabling AVG but I would do a complete uninstall. The best way to uninstall is to use the AVG Remover tool. Here is the link. http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities

If that solves the problem then I would suggest a different and better antivirus. We have some excellent free alternatives we can suggest if you wish.

Thankyou if you could suggest a different antivirus would be great. As your idea seems to be true as it started ok without avg on, we used avg because avast blocked the wife from doing the shopping as it said the shopping site was a virus. Edited by mercycle

Hi,

At the moment I know Starbuck ( our security expert ) is recommending MS Security Essentials.

I know he uses it and so do I.

Never had a problem with it - it updates itself daily ............just install it and let it do it's thing :)

You will need to know if you have a 32 or 64 bit Operating System

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Good deal. I'm glad that's all it was. You thought that might be the problem and you were right.
