carluk Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 I have an old Compaq Deskpro but was working fine and yesterday it became slow on startup, now it only goes as the first screen which has the amount of memory you have in the top left corner and bottom right F10 to enter setup and thats how it stays. Hope someone can help me with this problem Quote
KenB Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS Do you get any POST beeps ? ( one is normal ) Can you boot up Safe Mode? Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second. Select Safe Mode from the list of options. If this is XP - do you have the original installation disk ( not recovery disks ) ? carluk Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 Hi I dont get any POST beeps it turns on, I tried tapping F8 like you said and nothing happened. I was also reading somewhere about clearing the CMOS and reseating the components. Also tried running it with just with the basic periphals to run the computer I have the XP Upgrade disk for it Quote
KenB Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 reading somewhere about clearing the CMOS Did you try this? Remove the coin shaped battery from the motherboard for 1 minute - then replace. carluk Posted September 28, 2012 Author Posted September 28, 2012 i have removed the battery before out of it but not for about a minute so i will try that and get back to you Quote
terry0912 Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 I assume you have a floppy drive with your computer, Do you have a boot disk, or you can get one from Bootdisk http://www.bootdisk.com Disconnect your harddrive and boot from the floppy disk. The purpose of this: 1-- If the motherboard and CPU are OK you will get the dos boot up on the monitor ending with a flashing A:, which shows all is well. If it does not boot up with a floppy then either the Motherboard or the CPU has failed and you are looking for a new system. If the boot up is successful then you probably need a new harddrive. carluk Posted October 2, 2012 Author Posted October 2, 2012 Ive just removed the battery and power cable, left it for about 5 mins put it all back together and the computer booted straight up and started running chkdisk so it seems to be working. If i get anymore problem i let you know but thanks for you help. Quote
KenB Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Run it for a few days then let us know the results :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
carluk Posted October 4, 2012 Author Posted October 4, 2012 i had it running the other night and it went through chkdisk, finishes all that and starts loading to the normal desktop but is running really slow, i think its something to do with the memory but what do you guys think. Quote
KenB Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 i think its something to do with the memory One way to check .... Remove one of the modules ( leave the other in ) Run the machine. If it runs OK but not with the other module in place > it is a faulty module. If it runs slow with just one module - swap them over and try the other to see if there is a difference.
