usmanozzy786 Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Hi There, I recenlty broght a Acer Aspire 5749 laptop from argos via ebay and the item condition was refurbished. The issue I am having is when I try to wireless icon on bottom right next to clock it does not identify any wireless at all, however I am currently using edimax wireless adapter on the laptop to use internet and using the wireless adapter I can connect to wireless but if I take it out then it does not show any wireless to connect to? I went to manage devices and clicked on network devices and it does not show any exclamination or X marks next to network adapters. Can you please help me ????? Usman Quote
Synapse Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Hi, If I understand you correctly, using your built wireless adapter you cannot see any wireless networks, using an Edimax USB adapter you can see your network. So I'll follow that problem along Is your router also Edimax? I am wondering if your wireless channel set in your router is above 11. Some adapters can only see to channel 11, some to channel 13. Log in to your router and have a look. If you need help logging in, post your router make/model. Quote
KenB Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS Silly question - is the wireless switch on ? On my Acer it is at the back of the keyboard near the screen. KenB Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 It could be a very simple "fix" - let us know :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

usmanozzy786 Posted September 25, 2012 Author Posted September 25, 2012 Hi Kenb, I check my wifi and it was already turned on. Below is the image when I click on wireless without my edimax wireless adapter plugged in. Quote
KenB Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 With the Cable disconnected ... Start > ...type in ......cmd ......DO NOT hit ENTER right click on cmd.exe that appears top left of screen > Run as Administrator At the command prompt ( black screen ) type ..... ping 127.0.0.1 (space after ping) You should get 4 packets sent and 4 received - no losses. let me know the results. usmanozzy786 Posted September 25, 2012 Author Posted September 25, 2012 I disconnected the Edimax adapter and did what you said and the result was 4 sent and 4 received 0 lost Quote
KenB Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 I am currently using edimax wireless adapter on the laptop my brothers laptop and other PC in the house can find wireless If this is the case then it is unlikely to be a router problem unless ........ I assume that you have not checked in the router software that the channel is set to 11 or less as synapse suggested ? Do you know how to do this ? The fault could lie with your internal wireless adapter however the ping 127.0.0.1 confirmed that it can be communicated with. Do you know how to check if "Obtain IP and DNS Automatically " are checked ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! usmanozzy786 Posted September 26, 2012 Author Posted September 26, 2012 Well I changed the channel from channel 1 to channel 11 but still it could not find any, is this the correct path to check obtain auto IP and dns - start > control panel > network and sharing cneter > change adapter settings > right click local area connect > click properties > double click IPV4 /righ click properties > and then check the circle to obtain automatic IP and DNS. I will try this once I go home. Can you please provide me some more things to try on my laptop to get wifi working so I can try them at once together rather then trying one thing in a whole day? KenB Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 is this the correct path That is the correct path - yes. With the cable disconnected: Start > ....type in .....cmd .......do not hit ENTER Right click on cmd.exe top left of screen > Run as Administrator At the prompt type in ipconfig /flushdns (note there is a space after ipconfig) Then type ipconfig /release Then .......ipconfig /renew At the prompt type .....ipconfig /all Copy this and paste it here. (you can connect the cable to do this) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
usmanozzy786 Posted September 26, 2012 Author Posted September 26, 2012 Do you think IP has anything to do with not showing wireless names? Also I am not using a cable, I am using Edimax wireless adapter to connect to internet. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 If you are showing no connections available and you are using your wireless adapter. The first thing you need to check is that the adapter is enabled. Go to network and sharing center and then select "Change Adapter Settings" and make certain the adapter shows as enabled. Unless you are living in a rural area where there is no one else around you should see a number of available networks even if they are secured and you certainly should see your own. There is a pretty good chance that the adapter is just not working properly. Of course after rereading your first post where it says you can connect to wifi with the adapter in but not when you remove it. That makes no sense. If you have no adapter attached to your laptop why would you expect to find a network? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
usmanozzy786 Posted September 26, 2012 Author Posted September 26, 2012 @beeceebee - it has built in wifi Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Then why are you using a wireless adapter? Does it work without the adapter outside your house? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
usmanozzy786 Posted September 26, 2012 Author Posted September 26, 2012 Look at the image I attached yesterday thats what it shows/says when I disconnect the adapter Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 I have looked at the image. In fact I looked at it before I posted. Now answer just two questions, please. When you are at home with the adapter plugged into the laptop can you connect to your own wifi network? What is the purpose of the wireless adapter if you have built in wireless. Please do not direct me to another post just help out by answering the two questions I asked. Thanks! :) Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
usmanozzy786 Posted September 26, 2012 Author Posted September 26, 2012 Yes when I have wireless adapter connect I can connect to my home wifi network. The reason I use wireless adapter is because my built in wireless does not work for some reason thats what im trying to find a solution to. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 That is what I thought. If you have looked at the adapter settings and the built in card is enabled and you see no warnings in your device manager then the obvious conclusion is that there is something wrong with the internal adapter. If the hardware needs changing there is really nothing that can be done on a forum. If the adpapter works then the least expensive soultion is to just keep using it. usmanozzy786 Posted September 26, 2012 Author Posted September 26, 2012 I havent looked at no settings at all, can you provide me path to check those settings if they match or not Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 In post no 15 I told you how to check to see if your internal wireless card is enabled. I will add a few things. Remove the adapter from the usb port. Follow my instructions in the first paragraph of post 15. Is there a wireless adapter network card showing and if so does it say "enabled" if it is disabled then enable it. If it does not show one there then type "device manager" in the windows 7 search bar on the start menu. Select device manager from the top and look for "Network Adapters" what does it say? Make certain that your wireless adapter is not plugged in while you follow the steps above. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Synapse Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 His first post... I went to manage devices and clicked on network devices and it does not show any exclamination or X marks next to network adapters. So we know an adapter is installed correctly, I assumed it is the built in adapter, can you confirm? From BeeCeeBee's post the obvious conclusion is that there is something wrong with the internal adapter Not yet. The router wireless channel setup needs confirming as I asked previously. Also, it would be good to confirm if the built in card can see and connect to another wireless network. Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 (edited) Hi Synapse I guess I am reading this differently from you. I assumed that the lack of warnings in the device manager means very little if he had his external plugged in at the time. In addition if there is no card being recognized then there will also be no warnings. The image he posted showed no networks at all. If there were a working card it would show all the local networks even if they are secured. Hey, maybe I am missing something, it would not be the first time. :) Looking back at your post you have a point if the adapter is on one channnel and the internal card is on another there may be a conflict. Usually though he would still see his router. Edited September 26, 2012 by BeeCeeBee Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
