Do you think IP has anything to do with not showing wireless names?

It is possible - that is why I asked you to go through the ipconfig /release etc.

I would like to see two ipconfig /all results.

One with the working wireless adapter and the other with the USB adapter taken out.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi

I have deleted the attachment as you instructed us to ignore it :)

No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection while it has its media disconnected.

I assume that this is with the wireless USB adapter removed ?

Did you run the ping 127.0.0.1 with the USB adapter removed?

Were the results as posted earlier - 4 packets sent and received ....no losses ?

I said in post #11

The fault could lie with your internal wireless adapter

This could still be the case.

==============

With the USB adapter out ....

go back to the command prompt and type ....

ping 127.0.0.1

then type ....

ping 192.168.1.1

Should get 4 packets sent / received no losses in each case.

If you are still having problems after your driver update, I'd like you to check a couple of things.

First is to plug in the Edimax adapter, and then open a command prompt and type this

netsh wlan show interfaces

Press Enter and post the output please.

The other check is to take off a small panel underneath your laptop and have a look if the wireless card has the aerial connected.

I haven't seen your laptop model underneath, there should be a small panel with one or two screws attaching it, remove it, and you will see a small card, about the size of a large stamp. There should be one cable connected to it, whcih is the aerial.

This is what I get when I type that command

I asked very early on - is the wireless adapter switched on / disabled ?

What do you mean, I did turn on the wireless, the only thing I did was unplug the Edimax wireless adapter before I used the netsh wlan show interfaces command

Posted

Ok, I need you to run the 'show interfaces' command with your Edimax USB adapter plugged in and connected to the Internet.

It will show us what channel you are connected to on your router, which tells us if you in the standard channel range or connected to 12 or 13.

Hi, I have found the complete manual for your computer and you can look it over or download from this link.

http://www.manualowl.com/m/Acer Computers/Aspire-5749/Manual/257802

Now to your wireless!

It states in the interfaces report the device is disconnected.

This leaves us with two possibilities, either it is not turned on, (Go to page 1-21 in the manual) to check this, press the FN Key and the F3 key together.

Or secondly, being a refurbished machine, the previous owner disconnected the hardware inside the laptop, they maybe didn't want wireless, or trust the encryption available for wireless operation, and either disconnected some wiring or had someone do it for them.

Thanks for posting the output info. It shows the wireless channel as no 1, so that is not the problem, it also confirms the built in adapter status. The last thing I am wondering is that the aerial wire may have come loose from the wireless card - are you able to have a look underneath to see if there is a small removeable panel - often there is and the wireless card is underneath. It should have a small wire connected to it.

I looked at the back of the laptop and all it has it scraws nothing else I think I have to open all the scraws to access inside which I dont want to do it because I dont want to mess things up.

Any help would be nice (a step by step guide or pictures etc)

I have just looked at the photo of the base in that manual I linked to and you are correct, it doesn't have any removable covers for individual components.

However in chapter 3, there is a description of how to remove and replace the wireless LAN module, page number 3-21 to 3-23. This does involve removing the whole base.

If you do not feel it is something you can do I certainly recommend taking it to a technician. When not sure, it is too easy to break something that may not be easily repaired.

If on the other hand you are willing to give it a try, do read that chapter fully before attempting it.

Take special note about removing all electrical supply, including the battery, and also taking precautions against static electricity damage, if possible with a wrist strap.

I agree, no cover, no home repair. It's worth rechecking KenB's point about the wireless being switched off, and if that checks out ok, I think it will have to go back to be repaired.
