r0adrunner Posted December 1, 2012 Author Posted December 1, 2012 Should I uninstall the free McAfee program which came with the laptop before I install MS Essentials, I can i do it afterwards? Thanks. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Hi, yes you must stop and uninstall any previous anti-virus before installing a new one. here is the best and safe way to do it, first download the anti-virus of your choice to a folder where you know where it is, (I have one specifically for downloads and Firefox is set to automatically download to that folder) Next is to download the tool for removing the McAfee free trial from the McAfee website. You may have to search for it as at the moment I don't have an address for it. Next is to disconnect from the internet, and then use the removal tool to uninstall the McAfee. (Some anti-virus uninstallers may still need a connection to work, so disconnect straight after the uninstall is complete) Then open and install the free anti-virus of your choice. Once it is installed, you can then safely connect back to the internet, then open the new anti-virus and use its update function to make sure it is fully up to date. it is recommended to then run a scan with it. Hopefully there will be nothing to find, but if it does, please let us know and what it found. Our security guys can advise further if that is the case. Nev. r0adrunner Posted December 2, 2012 Author Posted December 2, 2012 Thanks for the instructions. I uninstalled the McAfee programs using the Windows Uninstall Program tool (I could not use the tools on the McAfee website because I had not registered there before the free trial which came with the laptop expired). I installed the MS Essentials program and performed a full scan which resulted in no threats being detected. Is there anything else I need to do? Thanks. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 Thanks for the update and so long as all is well, there should be nothing more to actually do that is necessary. However I will recommend you download and install Malwarebytes, the free version. This is a malware in general, scan on demand program that can find and remove the odd rogue that ordinary anti-virus programs might miss. The download page for Malwarebytes is here- http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ Click for the free version as it is all you really need, unless you do like what is offered for the paid for version. Once downloaded and installed, make sure you click the update tab first, then run a scan. As I said it is an on demand scanner in the free version, so we tend to reckon running a scan once a week is sufficient for average protection, though nothing to stop you running a scan every day, but do make sure you use the update function before running any scan. r0adrunner Posted December 3, 2012 Author Posted December 3, 2012 I followed your instructions and performed a Quick Scan and 72 threats were found and deleted. Is a Quick Scan sufficient? Thanks. Quote
Starbuck Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Is a Quick Scan sufficient? Yes, normally it is sufficient. But occasionally it is worth doing a full scan. The full scan is very 'in depth' and can take quite a long time...... but it will check everything. The big difference in the scans is that the full scan will check every drive.... not just the main one. So if you want to check any usb sticks, just plug them in to your computer and make sure that 'all drives' is checked. 72 threats were found and deleted Feel free to post the results of the scan in this thread and we'll check it just in case something may need following up on. Start Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Click on the logs tab. The logs are date stamped ... double click on the log that showed the infection items. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/new/mbamlog.png It'll open in notepad. Please copy/paste the report in your next reply. Quote Member of:UNITE
r0adrunner Posted January 1, 2013 Author Posted January 1, 2013 I have installed the latest version of Malwarebytes and run a quick scan with the results below. Starbuck Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Hi r0adrunner Scan results look ok. Are you experiencing any problems with the system? Please bare in mind that MBAM doesn't find all malware..... some need a dedicated program to find and remove them. But if you aren't experiencing any problems, it looks ok. Quote Member of:UNITE
r0adrunner Posted January 6, 2013 Author Posted January 6, 2013 No, so far I am not experiencing any problems, so I will assume things are ok. Thank you. I am very pleased with the performance of this Sony Viao laptop so far. Quote
r0adrunner Posted January 6, 2013 Author Posted January 6, 2013 Modem - is a simple device that allows you to connect to the internet via cable Router - usually has the facility to connect to the internet via cable or wireless. Allows you to create a network of computers. Your TalkTalk router will have the option to use both. There will be at least one RJ45 socket You will need an ethernet ( RJ45 ) cable You simply connect the cable to the socket on your laptop ( most have one ) and the socket on the router. Nothing else to do. I have found the RJ45 socket on the laptop, but I cannot find one on the TalkTalk router, just 4 LAN sockets, a DSL socket (which is in use) and a USB socket. Does this mean I cannot connect the router to my laptop using a cable? Thanks. Quote
KenB Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 just 4 LAN sockets This is what you connect the cable to. See the attachment 1698 in your post above.
