Truthfully I don't fully get what is happening. At one point you mention a freezing mouse pointer and then mention something about a modem issue and a red light on the screen. Can you be a little more detailed in your explanation of what is occurring.

As for the last member's advice about "Last known good configuration," that may work (it is always worth a try) but the instructions are vague at best. Shut down your computer and as it is rebooting slowly tap on the F8 key. You must do this before Windows starts to load. If you see the loading windows screen it is too late. Try again after windows boots. Tappin8 F8 will take you to the Advanced Boot Options window. White writing on a black screen. You can navigate using the arrows and the enter key.

You should also consider trying a System Restore to a point before this began happening.

When i press the start button on the Modem

Hi,

I think there may be a bit of confusion with the terminology. ( A Modem is an external device used to connect to the internet )

Are you referring to the start button on the case of your desktop computer?

The green light - is this near the start button on the case ?

What is the make and model number of your computer ?

[ This could be a Power Supply problem ....which is relatively cheap to put right ]

Hi,

I will change the thread title to reflect your problem :)

Are you happy to take a look inside the case ?

( It may look complicated but it isn't really )

If so ....switch off at the wall.

Take the side cover off ( you will probably need a screwdriver )

Get back to me when you are at this stage.

( If I am going too slow just say so :) )

Thanks for advice, but i will have to get my son in law to come down and do what you have advised to do. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

I will add a bit more information .....

Take a look here:

http://s13.zetaboards.com/kenspchelp/topic/6964867/1/#new

Ask him to

1. unplug at the wall and disconnect the printer / monitor / any other external device

2. take the RAM modules out and also the Video Card if there is one.

3. Switch on.

At this point we are looking for fans spinning and beeps from the machine.

(you will not get beeps if there is no internal speaker )

4. If all is OK at this stage switch off and connect the monitor again ( this may need the Video Card putting back in )

Try again.

You should get more beeps and see something on the monitor.

5. If you get to this stage then put the RAM modules back one at a time.

If one doesn't work ( no boot up ) then swap it for the other.

Let me know which stage you got to and the results in some detail please :)

Hi

Sorry for the late reply :)

Not all systems have a card - many are built straight onto the main board and cannot be removed.

The RAM modules look like this:

http://knoji.com/images/user/ram_slot_1.jpg

They may not be exactly the same but the slots they sit in are.

There will be a locking lever at each end.

You push this outwards and downwards to release the module.

To put it back in place - place the module in the slot ( it has to go the correct way around ....little notch in the contacts )

Then push down on one end > then the other.

The locking levers will automatically lock it into place.

Hello There.

Well we followed your instructions, The Ram Modules are at the back of the boxThere are two vertical Modules, these were taken out one by one, and we followed instructions With one Module in place the fan was working but no bleeps, We went through the procedure again. There was nothing on the monitor. We did the procedure again, still the same?

the fan was working but no bleeps

Did the system used to beep once ?

I am coming around to the conclusion that it is either the Power Supply Unit or the Main Circuit Board ( motherboard ) that is at fault.

Try this first:

Locate the CMOS battery on the main circuit board.

It looks like a shiny coin.

Take this out - leave it for 1 minute - put it back.

The + should be on top.

If this doesn't fix it then go here and follow the instructions to strip the main board down to just the basic power connections:

http://s13.zetaboards.com/kenspchelp/topic/6964867/1/#new

It would be useful to know if you used to get a single beep on start-up.

Can you hear the Hard Drive spinning and does the Windows Chimes sound - indicating that the system has booted up ?

(even though you can't see it)

Located silver disc, taken out as instructed, replaced still nothing, When pressing starter button on case, the fan comes on, but no beeps, after starting green flashes up to 10 times then goes off, the fan is still working, i will try the message, to strip the main board down.
