Hello everyone, sorry it is me again, this time the problem is as above. Just finished putting the finishing touches to a family tree on the flash drive, which has hyper-links to other (internal) documents. Works fine on my PC and opens these hyper-links every time, but just tried it on my friends pc, and the same hyper-link wont open. At top of his screen it says Microsoft Word (non-commercial), could it be that he is using a different MSWord system from mine which is MSWord Starter 2010, or is it just a glich in the system?

Any ideas or solutions gratefully accepted

Sue:confused:

PS either my typing is too fast or is the site having probs?

Hi Sue

I think it is related to the format you are saving the file in.

Word 2010 - by default - saves files with a .docx extension.

Older versions of Word use .doc

Your friend's version will not be able to open yours if this is the case.

2 options:

1. You have the option to save as Word 97 ( .doc ) by clicking the down arrow next to "Save as Type "

2. There is a compatibility pack from MS

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3

Your friend would need to install this to be able to open Word 2010 documents saved with the .docx ectension.

Hi Ken, thank you for that, and as usual I have made a note of it. The bit I cant get my head around is why on his pc it opens up the majority of the internal hyper-links, but just refuses point blank on others on his pc and as far as I am aware he also uses MSWord 2010. I have only used one PC to do all the work on, so can't understand why this is happening, and as I said all hyper-links work on mine.

Any more thoughts?

Did I mention how wonderful you are?

No problems as far as I am aware.

What happens ?

Tell Starbuck ......I tell him and he doesn't believe me :)

Sorry Sue - I mis-read your first post and didn't register the "hyperlink" issue.

If you send him a document with hyperlinks in - if he can open one .......can he open all ?

In other words if one doesn't open ......they all don't open.

Hi again Ken, sorry I haven't replied earlier, busy cooking the tea, and then husband on the pc, he's now watching "Being Liverpool" and I'm allowed on my computer again!!!!

I fully understand your misunderstanding of my first post, I guess it was a bit complicated. I don't send him a document with hyper-links in, the hyper-links are on the flash drive which I put into my friends' laptop and tried opening some of the internal hyper-links, and as I said the majority of them work, it's just some of them don't want to open up, and I think an error box came up which gave a yes or no option, both of which I tried but still couldn't open up all those hyper-links. I brought the Flash Drive back to my PC and they all opened up first time, and Iv'e never known this happen before. I am pretty sure he is operating MSWord 2010, but I do know he does sometimes fiddle around with his pc and doesn't really know what he is doing!!! so perhaps he may have done something that he is unaware of. I even tried putting my back-up master flash drive with all the same info on as the other one, and I still had the same problem on his laptop, but it opens every hyper-link on my pc. I would be extremely grateful if you are able to help me, as I said I've never come across this before.

Cheers

Sue

PS: Of course I will let Starbuck know, he's probably just jealous of your dynamic personality and winning ways!!!! Is that enough creeping for one day, 'cos I'm knackered now!

Is that enough creeping for one day,

More than enough :)

Is it possible to provide a section of text with a hyperlink that will not open on your friend's computer ?

(if this is personal this is not a problem :) )

Are the hyperlinks to external sites ?

What exactly did the error box say?

I can certainly send you one of the documents with a hyper-link to an internal site. The external links work fine.

Can't exactly remember what the box did say, although I don't think it was an Error Box, 'cos it didn't give an Error Number, it just said something like "can't open this" and a Yes and No box. with "Was this useful?" underneath. If you would like to send me your e-mail address, I would be more than happy to provide you with one of the documents concerned and I guess you will also need the document to which the hyper-link goes to.

Hi, I am a little confused here about your description of these hyperlinks, if those links are to websites on line, they should all work unless he has certain types of website blocked for security reasons.

However you say the links are to other internal documents, (this is where I am confused) by internal do you mean documents that are also on the flash drive? or are they documents on your computer?

If they are on your computer but not the flash drive, then of course they won't work on his computer, he won't have them..

Sorry if I am misreading what you mean, but thought I best say something as a just in case.

Hi Nev, nice to speak to you, and I am sorry I have been so long in replying, but have had a lot of housework and other things to do. The hyper-links are to other internal documents on the flash drive.

The Microsoft Office Word box that appears on screen shows and amber triangle with a exclamation mark within and states "Cannot open the specified file" and underneath that a click box with "OK" in it;

yet other internal hyper-links on the same page work fine. This only appears to be a problem on a lap-top pc, the links all work OK when using a desktop pc. I actually tried opening the links on my lap-top and and was experienced the same problems as my friend, the majority of links DO open, but some just don't want to know.

I really do apologise for taking up so much of your time. I thought I was pretty savvy on my computer knowledge, but this one has got me stumped

Thanks

Hi Ken, how remiss of me, I am so sorry, yes I did get your pm. I will mail you asap, but have been so busy today, I haven't even been able to finish off my coffee.

I have no problem sending you the page with hyper-links, but the document to which it is attached it somewhat large, with images of Birth, Marriage and Death Indexes & Census forms that opens with Windows Live Photo Gallery. And yes, before you ask, my friend does have that on his laptop, and also on mine. I may have to just re-jig the document in question and make it much smaller in order to send it to you.

Hi again, although I know Ken is going to be busy with this for you but my only thoughts left now are possible differences in versions of the Microsoft word you have used.

Although most other programs are backward compatible with earlier versions, a lot of earlier versions of a program, cannot work with or see files created on a later version of the same program.

That of course is a generalisation for a large range of programs, including some of my music creating stuff. However the principal may still apply with different versions of Microsoft office software.

Just my thoughts on the problem.
