Hi

I was just wondering if someone could advise me on zipping a file. Not sure if i'm doing something obvious wrong.

To zip a file i thought you just right clicked on it and chose 'send to zipped folder'. But when i do this my original file, which is 15.5mb, only becomes 14mb in the zipped folder when i click properties.

I wanted to send it by email but when i attach the 'zipped file' it still takes ages and takes up 14mb. I've also had this problem with photos where i seem to have zipped a file but the size has only changed slightly and not enough to make any difference when emailing.

Thanks very much for any advice :-)

Hi, and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

This result you are seeing may be down to the nature of the file itself, some types of data, HD video for example and also JPG type photo's will not compress by very much in any case.

What type of file are you trying to zip please?

Ah that could be the answer then cos the photos were jpg files.

The only others i tried with were sound files mp3 and wav format.

Hi again, yes indeed as both JPG photo's and MP3 sound files are already in a compressed format, so no further compression is available without losing quality. The WAV files though should compress a little by zipping them.
