Hello all,

As per one of my previous posts, I am shortly moving house & will be using my laptop as opposed to my tower system. I was on cable, but will not be at my new address & the tower system is now in storage & wont be used again, at least, I don't think so. The question is, is it possible to transfer the info on the tower to my laptop, bearing in mind, the tower is no longer connected. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Cheers

Thank you for the link. Now here's the next dumb question. I presume the tower will need to be plugged in. Also these are the features listed for the link cable.

Features:

- Transfer files between two PC's

- Simple drag and drop operation (This is the bit I don't understand, or is it an alternative?)

- Compliant with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0

- Supports Windows VISTA, XP, 2000

- Synch Outlook mail and data between two computers

- High speed USB 2.0 performance with transfer rate of upto 480Mbps

Cheers

Hi BeeJay yes it needs to be set up but not connected to the internet , or you could remove the hard drive from the tower and connect it to the laptop using a hard drive dock http://www.amazon.co.uk/Freecom-31994-Hard-Drive-Dock/sim/B002611YO2/2 and get your data from the drive that way

You will need your tower system turned on and fully working with Mouse and Keyboard. Your laptop will need to be next to the tower system while your using the transfer cable.

"Drag and drop" means this; While on your tower system with the data transfer cable connected to both tower and laptop you will have a window which will be your laptop.

Files that you wish to move FROM the tower system TO the laptop is moved by "dragging" the file and "dropping" it into the laptop window, this then starts a transfer of the file from the tower to the laptop. This is where "drag and drop" comes from.

Hi, I have one of those cables, and there is nothing automatic, you don't just plug it in and everything goes from one to the other, you do have to do it all yourself via drag and drop. You can work from either the laptop, or from the desktop, but all you need is the mouse.

It is some time since I last used mine so this is from memory, you need to install any software or program that comes with the cable on both computers first.

Once the two computers are fully booted up, you then open the cables program on whichever computer you are working from, this then shows two windows side by side, one for the laptop, the other window being the desktop. In the desktop window, which is in your case, you navigate to whichever folder you wish to get the data from, say for example the "My Pictures" folder, then in the laptop window, you navigate to whichever folder is to be the destination. Then click on whichever file, or sub folder you want on the desktop window, and drag it across into the destination folder. These cables only copy the data across, they don't actually fully move it.

Hope that has explained a bit more for you.

I stopped using my cable when I got a router, with that I networked both computers and copy data via the network now.
