Allsaints79 Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Hi, I would appreciate any help / advice. Please note I only have very basic knowledge of PC's. I have a 4 year old PC OS – Vista 64 bit. I use a TP Link WN722N USB wireless adapter to connect to the internet. However, for the past couple of days I have not been able to gain any Internet access Wireless or through an Ethernet cable. The router still works as I have other connections on it. The TP link Utility appears to see the wireless connection as it details signal strength but the network icon has a red cross over it. The trigger to the loss could have been caused by loss of power to router or a Registry Clean I completed. If I go into Network Adapters I have: > Nvidia nForce /10/100Mbps Ethernet > TP Link Mpbs Wireless Lite N Adapter Both adapters don't show an error. I have tried everything detailed on a google search including resetting TCP/ IP Stack, check disk, disabling network adapters and re-setting the router. Here is my Config All screen shot as I believe that will help. Any advice to get me back on line would be really appreciated. Quote
KenB Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS. or a Registry Clean I completed. Oh dear .......this is probably the culprit. We never advise using Registry Cleaners for this very reason .....they do more harm than good. I have not been able to gain any Internet access Wireless or through an Ethernet cable. If other devices are OK then it must be your machine. start > type in ......cmd ....( do not hit Enter ) Right click on cmd.exe that shows top left of screen > run as Administrator At the prompt type .......ping 127.0.0.1 (space after ping ) You should get 4 packets sent / received and no losses. Do you ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

KenB Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Try a system restore to a date just before the start of the problem. Start > .....type in ....system restore ....Enter If an appropriate date is not shown tick the box to show other dates. Your files / data etc will be fine. ============= Check the following services are set correctly: DNS Client = auto Network Connections = manual Network List = Auto Network Location = Auto Network Store Interface = Auto These are the important two .... Allsaints79 Posted October 11, 2012 Author Posted October 11, 2012 Hi Ken B. Unfortunately I dont have System Restore as it was not enabled. I have checked the Services as detailed all are listed as you have. Please find the contents of the hosts doc: # Copyright © 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost ::1 localhost thanks for your help Quote
Allsaints79 Posted October 11, 2012 Author Posted October 11, 2012 Hi further to this, when I have googled 'hosts file' Spybot has come up on several search results. I have just remembered Ive recently uninstalled Spybot from the machine and disabled it in services through msconfig as it seemed to being making the maching 'hang' at start up. I have not had internet since. Could this be linked and how could I resolve it? thanks Quote
KenB Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Spybot is anti-malware software ( not particularly good ) that is past it's sell-by date. I don't think it would be the cause of your problem though. Your Hosts file is OK. Start > type in ...cmd .....> Run as Administrator ( as before ) At the prompt type in ....ipconfig / release Then type ......ipconfig /renew (space after ipconfig) Then type ....ipconfig /flushdns Then type .....netsh winsock reset Then type .....netsh int ip reset Try the connection wired with the cable. ============= Start > Control Panel > Network & Sharing Right click on "Local Area Connection" > Properties Uncheck .......(TCP/IPv6) > OK Then go back .... Click on TCP/IPv4 (this should have a check in the box) > Properties Is "Obtain and IP Address ..." and "Obtain DNS Server ..." checked? If not - what is there ? ================= Try disabling the firewall. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Allsaints79 Posted October 12, 2012 Author Posted October 12, 2012 Hi Ken, Thanks for getting back to me. Please excuse my limited knowledge. I tried the first sequence. When I type ipconfig /renew I get "the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation". - Therefore I presume I stop there. With regards to Network and Sharing when I enter it has my pc then a red cross then the Internet. There is no Local area connection option there. I can click on Manage Network Connections which is on list of options to the left. Two items appear: Local Area Connection 2 which has a red cross over it and says Network cable unplugged: NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Next to it is a Wireless Network Connection 5. That has no cross full signal strength and says enabled. If I right click TCP/IPv6 is unchecked. All other instructions are as you say. I have disabled the Firewall - still refuses to connect wired or wireless. thanks Quote
KenB Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Did you try this from the elevated command prompt ?... Then type .....netsh winsock reset Then type .....netsh int ip reset After this type .....ipconfig /renew Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Allsaints79 Posted October 12, 2012 Author Posted October 12, 2012 Hi, Followed the actions with the following results: netsh winsock reset > I get "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart" netsh int ip reset > I get "Reseting Echo Request, failed. Access is denied". ipconfig /renew > I get "the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation". Kind regards Quote
KenB Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Can you disable your AV and try connecting ? Which AV do you have ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
KenB Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 I found a thread that was exactly the same as yours - the problem was the AV ( McAfee in this case ) It is worth a try. Disable AVG http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_5052104_disable-avg-antivirus.html Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Allsaints79 Posted October 12, 2012 Author Posted October 12, 2012 Hi KenB, Thanks again for your advice. AVG has now gone, but still no in internet. Other similar accounts on the internet have stated that a OS reinstall is the only way of restoring internet , so Im considering this once Ive purchased something large enough to back my data up on to. cheers Quote
KenB Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 OS reinstall is the only way We don't give up that easily :) Have you completely removed AVG ( no bad thing ) ? Did you restart the pc after the winsock reset ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Allsaints79 Posted October 13, 2012 Author Posted October 13, 2012 Hi, Yes I have completed a restart following a Winsock reset and it does not change the connection. AVG 2013 has totally been removed and the problem remains. thanks Quote
KenB Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Hi From the elevated command prompt try these again please: netsh winsock reset catalog netsh int ip reset reset.log Re-boot the machine. There is a FixIt here: (scroll down ) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 You would have to save this to a pen-drive and run it from there. Allsaints79 Posted October 13, 2012 Author Posted October 13, 2012 Hi, From an elevated command prompt: > netsh winsock reset catalog - brings "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog" > netsh int ip reset reset.log - brings "Reseting Echo Request, failed. Access is denied". thanks Quote
KenB Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Hi What happens if you now try .... netsh int ip install Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Allsaints79 Posted October 13, 2012 Author Posted October 13, 2012 If I complete netsh int ip install it just states restart. Upon doing this still no network. The above action still brings netsh int ip reset reset.log - brings "Reseting Echo Request, failed. Access is denied". thanks Quote
KenB Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Hi try this from the elevated command prompt: ( run as administrator ) netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Also ... Start > Control Panel > Network & Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections ( on the left ) You should see your Local Area Connection and the Wireless one. What does it say under Local Area Connection ? Does it say "Disabled" ? (mine says network cable unplugged) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Allsaints79 Posted October 13, 2012 Author Posted October 13, 2012 Hi Ken, Thanks for all your advice. Still no joy, so in the end I partitioned my hard drive, put all data to one part and reinstalled Vista. It took best part of a day, however, I now have internet connection. Having searched around the net for problems involving “Reseting Echo Request, failed. Access is denied" & “"the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation".” I am yet to see anyone who resolved it without a re-install. I think the registry or winsock had become corrunpted. I had spent several days trying to repair it without any luck. Thanks again Quote
KenB Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Good to hear that you are up and running again. I am yet to see anyone who resolved it without a re-install. I was hoping that we may be the first :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Plastic Nev Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Hi, as you suggest, it may have been registry corruption, and as Ken said in his first post, we do not ever recommend registry cleaners as this is all too often the result of using them. There are two very interesting articles written regarding these so called registry cleaners, a bit technical in places but do explain why they are no use and why they can cause damage. http://www.whatthetech.com/2007/11/25/do-i-need-a-registry-cleaner/ http://www.edbott.com/weblog/2005/04/why-i-dont-use-registry-cleaners/ Uninstall any registry cleaner you have, and don't try another is the best I can offer in advice.
