colincork Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Hi All I realise this issue comes up allot .I have checked through suggestions I have found with no luck . Background :I have a dell windows xp 5 yrs old .I have been connecting to it, for a few years, various hard drives ,popcorn hour, iomega and notepad. For some reason not sure when (cant attribute anything to it) they just all stopped at the same time being recognised. My cable works fine ,tested. My external harddrives all work fine ,tested on other pc Popcorn hour has external power so dont believe that its a power supply issue to the usb port USB ports working fine ,memory sticks still working fine etc External hardrives are not appearing in disk management Ran dell's updates along with the devise checker for problems ,nothing comes back all working fine any further suggestions anyone has would be greatfully accepted. KenB Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Hi and welcome to ExTS You say that the Hard Drives do not show up in Disk Management. Please go back and check this for me .... Is there a drive space showing that does not have a drive letter associated with it ? When you connect the drive - does it spin ? Is this XP we are working with ? if it is - download TweakUI from here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-xp Scroll down the page. I will explain in the next post if you install it. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! KenB Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 Hi again Colin It is a long time since I used TweakUI so bear with me ...... If you install and run it there should be - on the left side - some indication of Hard Drives. If you click on this all of the possible hard drive letters are shown. Make sure that each of them has a tick next to it. If you need to change any then finish with Apply/OK Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! KenB Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Hi Colin could it be a virus or worm causing the problem Anything is possible. I have never had a problem with TweakUI before. Download MBAB from here ( you may get re-directed .....this is OK ) You want the FREE version http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Install and run it. It will produce a log. Copy this and post it here. This is what you should see from TweakUI - do you ? KenB Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Hi he tells me that the system needs to be wiped and the operating systems reloaded that sounds a bit drastic - but it should solve your problem. Did you have anything on the drive that needed backing up ? If so - you need to contact him before he wipes the drive Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
