Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Claira,

by the restart, do you mean actually trying the restart from the shut down, or do you mean after putting the laptop into sleep mode and then tryning to restart it?

Nev.

Hi and welcome to ExTS

In addition to what Nev has asked .....

If you leave the battery out and use just the power adapter .....does the laptop boot up and restart / shutdown normally ?

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi claira,

Try the following:

Start .....type in ......cmd.......[do not hit Enter yet ]

Right click on cmd.exe that appears top left of screen > Run as Administrator

At the command prompt type ........sfc /scannow .....Hit Enter [ there is a space after sfc ]

This will check the system files.

If you have a Win7 disk you may be asked for it if there are any problems.

This may sound odd but give it a try ......

Take the battery out and unplug the mains adapter.

Hold the power button down for a good few minutes.

Leave the battery and mains power disconnected for an hour then try the machine again.

I have seen this work with similar problems :)
