[Solved] Messed up Linksys WRT54GL Router

I was experiencing browser redirects on more than one computer on my network, so I ran many virus removal applications, they found and removed a few viruses. I also decided to reset my Linksys WRT54GL router by pressing the little button on the back for 10 secs.

 

When I went to try and connect to my usual wireless connection on my laptop, it no longer appeared in my list of "Available Connections". (I had given it a unique name). Instead, all that appeared was just a generic "Linksys" connection BUT I also noticed that it was now UNSECURED. Previously I had WPA2 security.

 

I went to "Set up a new connection" and gave it another unique name, selected WPA2, and tried rebooting the laptop. But all that the laptop recognises now is the generic "Linksys" Unsecured connection. (Which I have to assume is mine as it has the strongest signal, but there are a long list of other connections belonging to neighbours, and some of those are also unsecured! None of those others are called Linksys though.)

 

My setup is as follows:

 

One Desktop computer on an ethernet cable and 2 wireless laptops. A SmartAX MT882 Modem connected to the Desktop computer and the Linksys WRT54GL allowing the laptops to connect to the network.

 

The laptop which will no longer connect securely is running Windows 7 64bit.

 

I am able to access my routers IP address at http://192.168.1.1/ but I can't see any changes I could make that would give me back a secure connection on my laptop.

 

Any clever clogs here who can help me out of this pickle? LOL!

Hi and welcome to ExTS

 

The button you have pressed has returned your router to factory settings - in other words it is as if it was straight out of the box.

 

You should have had a set-up CD that came with it.

KenB, thank you very much for your reply.

 

I realised that what I thought was the router's web address, i.e http://192.168.1.1/ was actually going to the modem's configuration page instead! So I connected the router on its own directly to the laptop and went to the above address. I was then able to access the actual Linksys Configuration Page; that allowed me to select WPA2 Security, which is now confirmed on all laptops.

 

Hope this helps someone else (or me in the future if I mess up again LOL!)
