aaronnorth Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Hi all, I can get 30mb/s download on my laptop over wifi, but I am only getting 7mb/s on my desktop. I can get 38mb/s on my laptop through ethernet cable but I can't plug my desktop in because the "Ethernet Controller" and "Ethernet Adapter" are not working properly and I don't know how to fix that either.. It says, Ethernet Controller -This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) Ethernet Adapter - This device cannot start. (Code 10) I have checked for updates and there aren't any. Any help as to why this is happening? I have Vista Business OS. Thank you Quote
aaronnorth Posted November 12, 2012 Author Posted November 12, 2012 I've sorted the Ethernet problem out now, that will receive 38mb/s when plugged in same as the laptop. So it's just the question why can I only get 7mb/s over wifi? Thanks, Quote

aaronnorth Posted November 13, 2012 Author Posted November 13, 2012 Hi is this a fibre-optic connection ? use this test and let me know the results ( wireless ) please. http://www.speedtest.net/ Hi Yes it is, I'm with Sky. It is worse than yesterday for some reason now. http://www.speedtest.net/result/2304454645.png This is yesterday's Then this is the 31/10/12 when it was installed. This is the highest it's ever been, I was told to wait 10 days to allow the line to settle, but all its done is go downhill. The upload has been a consistent 7Mb/s http://speedtest.net/result/2276355988.png Thanks, Quote
KenB Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 allow the line to settle, Strange comment from BT engineer. We have a fibre-optic installation engineer as a member - I will ask him if he can advise. If you are getting 38 MB/s with an ethernet cable it is either the wireless side of the router or your adapter. Start > type in ....devmgmt.msc ......Enter Click the + next to Network Adapters Are there any yellow exclamation marks against the WiFi adapter ? If you get a friend / neighbour to try connecting wireless with their laptop - do they get the same speed ? BreatGritain Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 allow the line to settle, Where I work, one of our many, many targets is "Early Life Failures", where a customer calls in for another technicians visit within 7 days of the original install - perhaps BT have a similar target, perhaps the engineer was hiding something? Or, maybe it's legit with BT's infrastructure - I don't know. Start > type in ....devmgmt.msc ......Enter Click the + next to Network Adapters Are there any yellow exclamation marks against the WiFi adapter ? Whilst here, please advise the make/model of your WiFi adapter. How far away is the PC from the Router? Are there any walls inbetween? Is your router located near a TV, chordless telephone, hi-fi or other electronic stuff? It might be worth mentioning some slower pc's (not necesserily older, just ones that are running slow...) don't give an accurate speed test result when using a Flash-Based speed test website. Try http://www.speedof.me and see if you get similar results. Most ISP's don't even advertise a Wi-Fi speed, let alone garauntee one, as there are so many factors that can reduce the speed beyond their control. If you're getting the expected speed hard-wired, it's very likely that Sky won't do anything about your problem. Good luck. Quote

All adapters are fine, we have 2 laptops and both have strong 28-30Mb/s connections Where I work, one of our many, many targets is "Early Life Failures", where a customer calls in for another technicians visit within 7 days of the original install - perhaps BT have a similar target, perhaps the engineer was hiding something? Or, maybe it's legit with BT's infrastructure - I don't know. Whilst here, please advise the make/model of your WiFi adapter. How far away is the PC from the Router? Are there any walls inbetween? If you're getting the expected speed hard-wired, it's very likely that Sky won't do anything about your problem. Good luck. It's a "Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter". Then there's another below it "Intel® 82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection" It's about 15-20ft away, no walls. There is a cordless phone there, but I tried the laptops next to the desktop, and upstairs etc but it always comes out around the same speed anywhere in the house. Today I got 14.09Mb/s on speed test and 14.35Mb/s on speed of me. But the laptop has also increased to 34Mb/s Yeah it didn't actually say 'guarantee' but it was estimated to get between 40-40Mb/s so I was pretty much guaranteed that haha, and they have gave me that anyway, I'm getting 38Mb/s over cable so I know I can't complain to Sky about anything. It's obviously something on my end but I don't know what.. I'm assuming my pc if the latop's are ok. I wasn't sure if I would have to upgrade my network adapter or something else And this is what the 10 days is about; "The first 10 days of your connection we will run a Dynamic Line Management (DLM) test on the line. This is when we will try to find the most stable speed to perform on your connection. " Thanks Quote
KenB Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 All adapters are fine, we have 2 laptops and both have strong 28-30Mb/s connections As you say - this narrows it down to your specific machine. Go back to Device Manager ( devmgmt.msc ) and right click on your wireless adapter ( Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter ) Uninstall. Re-boot. Windows should find "new hardware" and re-install the drivers. What is the make and model number of your laptop ? - in case we need to locate the drivers. BreatGritain Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 The best speed I personally have seen with a G wifi card is 22-23mb. I'm not sure if thats the maximum they can handle, just an observation from the job. I personally would be looking to upgrade that card to an N model, or try fix your hard wired problems... I can't be of much more help im afraid! Quote
aaronnorth Posted November 15, 2012 Author Posted November 15, 2012 11.62Mb/s, reinstalled the network adapter - 11.52Mb/s The Laptop's are a Dell Vostro 1500 & a Dell Inspiron N5050. I personally would be looking to upgrade that card to an N model, or try fix your hard wired problems... I can't be of much more help im afraid! I'll have a look at the laptop cards. But cheers for your advice, if it can't be sorted I'll try an upgrade as the next step. Are the cards a universal fit?/ Compatible with all PC's? I've never bought one before Thanks Quote
KenB Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Give this a try: click here Not too expensive and will confirm if your adapter is playing up. It will cope with 150Mb/s Are the cards a universal fit?/ There are different PCI options see here You would need to check which slots you have available on the motherboard. EDIT Just read reference to a laptop ........... You would be better off with the Belkin USB wireless adapter Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! aaronnorth Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 The adapter has come. I've plugged it in and installed the drivers from the disk etc but it can't find any networks.. I've looked at the properties on device manager and it's up to date and windows says it's working properly etc. I've also reset it by enabling/ disabling the adapter, nothing. Getting annoying now, I might just buy a new computer. Those new iMac's are looking good lol Quote

BreatGritain Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Just guessing here... Using the start menu, find the software that installed with the USB stick and run it, there might be a way to connect through here. ( the software could have switched Windows' own software off) If your already doing that, try the opposite and use the Windows software as usual, it should in theory recognise the new hardware. Have you tried uninstalling the laptops original network card drivers, there might be a conflict? Quote
aaronnorth Posted November 20, 2012 Author Posted November 20, 2012 I've tried both, here are some screen shots http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii226/aaron_north1/1-4.jpg http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii226/aaron_north1/2-6.jpg I'll try uninstalling the drivers Thanks, Quote
KenB Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Hi plug the Belkin in and go back to Device Manager Start > type in ....devmgmt.msc ......Enter Click the + next to Network Adapters Is it listed here ? If you right click on the Monitor icon ( bottom right of screen ) does your home network show there ? If so - click on it and try to connect. If you are asked for a network key - this is the one on the back or base of the router.
