Hi yankee did you create recovery disks , if you did insert disk 1 let windows files load and set up start and then select repair my computer , this will attempt repairs to sort the non booting problems, if you haven't get back to us and we'll advise further

Which OS do you have ?

Recovery disc's start to load up then nothing .

This sounds like a hard drive problem.

Do you have an adapter or caddy that you can connect the drive up to and attach to another computer ?

the host Pc attempts to format the drive

It recognises it as a drive but not one that is formatted.

Can you connect it up - without it being formatted - so that you can run some checks on the drive ?

With the drive connected to the second machine ....

Start > type in ......diskmgmt.msc.......Enter

Does the drive show up here?

[ Disk 0 will be the hard drive on the machine itself ]

Does it show up if you click on "Computer" [ again with it connected to the second machine ] ?

In Disk Management the J drive has a Status Healthy Active but the File system is blank, below this is PQService ? Status is Healthy, Unknown Partition? File system is NTFS ...

PQService Partition will probably be the recovery partition.

You can use this to re-install (assuming the drive is OK )

You have not told me the Operating System - is it XP ?

To try to get your data off the drive try this:

You will need to do this with the drive connected to the working machine.

You can still try the Recuva software from the link.

It will take two or three hours - depends on the size of the drive and the amount of data.

if you can get your data back then we can look at possibly re-installing if the hard disk itself is OK.

You would need to specify which drive to scan - presumably J:
