Teabags Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 My 18 month old Dell desktop started playing up a few weeks ago (Windows 7 HP) due to either malware or being turned off suddenly. After hours of tedious diagnostics the hard disk needed replacing which I have done and 3 attempts to load the OS (despite being a novice). W7 is up and running but my remaining problems are the inability to change the screen saver, cannot get Windows Media Player to work -error 0x0000006. I also need to update drivers ?video card but my ethernet connection will not work (it does on this computer) and if I do get on line is it safe to download drivers without any security software? Sorry to go on but I am a novice needing a bit of hand holding.:o Quote
Vr5fx Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Hi Teabags. Windows "should" install without problems on the first attempt. I think there may be another problem. When you say that your desktop started playing up due to malware or being turned off suddenly what where the symptoms of the PC? I can't help you with the screen saver issue, or the error code you are receiving, but someone else will come along and help. You should have an anti virus program, good free ones are http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage and http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download. Only download drivers from the manufacturer websites, or known sources. Some downloads from other websites install programs that we don't want if care isn't taken Do you have the model of your Dell PC, this might help other members. Teabags Posted November 20, 2012 Author Posted November 20, 2012 The PC is a Dell Inspiron 580 with an Intel i3 Processor 550 (3200GHz,4MB). The original problem was a corrupted d:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi and the Symptom Tree diagnosed a failed drive (Samsung) which I have since replaced with a Dell (WD) disk of the same spec. The OS is up and running (Windows7 HP) but the original System Diagnostics Reported (thankfully I had printed it) the missing drivers as 1. PCI Simple Communications Controller Driver is missing. 2. Ethernet Controller is missing ( I may have accidentally deleted them):o As I am unable to get on line with this PC is there another way of downloading these drivers. Any advice would be appreciated.:D Quote
Armageddon Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Hi Teabags you try going to Dells support page putting in the Service tag of the machine and downloading drivers you need copy them to cd/usb then install on the machine you need them on Quote Google is your friend We are all members helping other members. Teabags Posted November 20, 2012 Author Posted November 20, 2012 Thank you for the advice. Will try that later. Quote
Teabags Posted November 21, 2012 Author Posted November 21, 2012 Have been on the Dell site with my tag number but totally confused me, also Microsoft and Intel sites but don't understand what to download. I think the drivers I need are for Intel ® 5 series/3400 series chipset PCI express root port6-3B4C. Integrated Intel GMA accelerator X4500 graphics, also no Network Adapter driver so cannot get online. I am now at my novice limit and wits end!. I still have the drivers and utilities disk that came with the computer but doesn't really do much when I insert it. Quote
Teabags Posted December 22, 2012 Author Posted December 22, 2012 Re: my previous thread on install problem. Taken me a while to sort this Dell PC out which was a steep learning curve, but managed to replace the drivers from the disk (which were there all the time :o) so have internet access. My remaining problems are that the corrupted file is still there CBS.log windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log if this makes sense and I am unable to start Windows Update (80070246 and dt100 codes) so are these files related? Are there any simple ways to resolve this please? Thank you in advance and for the previous help.:) Quote
KenB Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 Hi, I merged your recent post with the original thread - they are related. windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log This is where System File Check logs are stored. If you are getting an error message suggesting that CBS.log is corrupt it is OK to delete it. ( The CBS.log folder that is ) It will be created again next time sfc /scannow is run. so are these files related? No - they are not linked. I am unable to start Windows Update Take a look here and try the FixIt click here Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Teabags Posted December 22, 2012 Author Posted December 22, 2012 (edited) Thank you KenB. Have tried the Fixit several times but will not work. Looking through the logs.....Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.256 keeps failing. I am giving up with this computer now(Dell one) and just use it for word processing and leave off line. Edited December 22, 2012 by Teabags Quote
KenB Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 I am unable to start Windows Update Click Start > type in ...services.msc ......ENTER Scroll down .... Is the "Automatic Update" service started ? There is an option to "Start this service" if you highlight it and click on "Action" in the toolbar. Teabags Posted December 23, 2012 Author Posted December 23, 2012 Thanks again KenB. Automatic Update service was ok. The SelfUpdate Package installation was failing still with error 0x8007246 but managed to find Hotfix KB947821 System Update Readiness Tool which I downloaded and and to my surprise actually worked, resulting in downloading 130 odd updates! As for the corrupt file I think I can live with that at the moment. Quote
KenB Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 System Update Readiness Tool This was to be my next suggestion :) Can we mark this one as "solved" ?
