ios to reinstall windows, are they easy to come by? thank you Quote
Bluesplayer. Posted November 21, 2012 Posted November 21, 2012 Where the blue screen error is reported, is not necessarily where it first started and may not be the cause. But MEMORY_MANAGEMENT is listed x 2 You say your 'Ram is maxed out' But list - '2.00 GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 333MHz (5-5-5-15)' Check Crucial online scan to see what is installed and what may or not be added. http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/index.aspx ----- Run a Mem Test. http://www.memtest86.com/download.html Download the ISO file from one of the links above to your desktop. Then burn the ISO to a Cd. Start the Pc using the Cd and run the memory test overnight or for at least 8 passes. It is best to run a full scan on individual Ram sticks if you can. Or run the test but if any errors are shown - then remove all sticks of Ram and test each Ram stick one at a time. ----- You can also run the Mem test from a USB stick http://www.memtest.org/#downiso Scroll down to Download (Pre-built & ISOs) Download -Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7) *NEW!* Download to your desktop - unzip it there. Put the USB stick into your Pc USB slot. Click on the Install icon on your desktop - it will then have a box appear asking you to name the USB drive letter. Put the drive letter in the box and click on install. But first check that you are using the correct drive letter - with the USB stick in the USB slot of your PC - right click My Computer > click on Open. Your USB stick will be listed with the drive letter. ---- Let us know the result of the Ram test. Quote
alexsurridge Posted November 22, 2012 Author Posted November 22, 2012 hi blue, sorry if i'm being a bit thick but i really can't get the ram test to boot. first i tried by cd rom but it wasn't having it (even with cd rom as 1st priority boot) so i then tried usb the E: usb says it is bootable or it actually says multiboot but when i restart it just boots as normal. I feel like I haven't got the bios in the right settings. i have " ASUSTeK award P5VD2-VM" and its confusing me do you have any suggestions? thanks alex Quote
Bluesplayer. Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Have you tried another Cd in the Cd drive - will it boot [start] from the Cd? Will it boot to another USB stick? When you set the Bios to start from the Cd - are you saving the settings before leaving the Bios? Pressing F10 will do this on most Pc's. Quote
Armageddon Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 Hi sorry to butt in but was the Mtest cd burnt as a iso or just as a normal cd , the following bit of software will allow the downloaded mtest iso to be burnt to a cd ActiveISO if you download the active iso burner from that page you can then create your mtest disk Quote Google is your friend We are all members helping other members. alexsurridge Posted November 24, 2012 Author Posted November 24, 2012 hi, i finally managed to get it to boot from usb, so its still doing the memtest, i have had it running for nearly 24hours and its still only 66% should the bottom half of the screen be red? and scrolling? how long should i leave it on? thanks alex Quote
Bluesplayer. Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 8 passes or overnight should be enough but at 66% - I'd let it complete the scan. Any Red entries will mean the Ram is faulty. Is there anything showing in Red - how many sticks of Ram are there installed? Quote
alexsurridge Posted November 25, 2012 Author Posted November 25, 2012 right, i left memtest running for 47hours. i'm not really sure if it worked properly. the bottom half of the screen was all in red. i took a photo but can't find the cable to upload! so what are we looking for? pentium D (0.09) 2800 MHz L1 cache: 16K 17720 MB/s L2 cache: 1024K 15641 MB/s L3 cache: NONE memory: 2047M 2241MB/s chipset: pass 1% test 3% test *3 (moving inversions, 8 bit pattern) testing: 184K - 2047M 2047M pattern: 80808080 walltime: 47:45:36 cached: 2047M RsvdMem: 12K MemMap: e820 cache: on ECC: off test: std Pass: 0 Errors: 193875712 ECC Errs: 0 by the way there is 2 sticks of ram installed. thankyou for all your advice alex Quote
Armageddon Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Hi Alex have you ran the crucial memory scanner posted in post 4 , personally given the number of errors posted I'd consider new ram and I the scanner will offer you the right ram and a price , I use crucial myself Quote Google is your friend We are all members helping other members. alexsurridge Posted November 27, 2012 Author Posted November 27, 2012 hi armageddon, yes i have run the crucial scanner and on you're advice i have purchased a new pair of ram (2x 2GB) they should arrive tommorowish, should i run memtest again after i install them? so i'm thinking of putting a new hard drive in aswell, i have been reading about ssd and that sounds better than hard drives, would you recomend an ssd? also i need to replace the graphics card, can i install ddr3 even though my ram is ddr2? thanks for everyones advice alex Quote
Armageddon Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Hi Alex no you don't need to run mtest after installing the new ram , and yes SSD's are very good but do remember if you use one not to format it and turn off vista's auto defrag which runs when the pc is idle, and yes you can use a ddr3 graphics card with ddr2 ram Quote Google is your friend We are all members helping other members. alexsurridge Posted November 28, 2012 Author Posted November 28, 2012 okay, so i have fitted the new ram, which at the moment (early days) seems to have cleard the stop errors. thankyou i have a couple more questions if it is okay to ask in this thread? i think i'm going to go for an ssd as the pc has been bashed about a bit and its still a bit slow. i'm just not 100% sure if i'm making the right choice this is what crucial said http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=C707AD7CA5CA7304 do you think 32gb is big enough? we only use the pc for internet streaming and casual gaming (nothing really) and don't really store any big files either. after it is installed i can get rid of the old noisy hard drive? thanks again alex Quote
Plastic Nev Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I would be inclined to look for a bigger drive than that myself, however if you do not store music, video, pictures or much of other file types, also look at any programs you wish to install and what their size is, but the 32GB drive should be OK for the uses you mention. As for the old hard drive, if you do decide to start storing stuff, it can be left in the case if there is room and connected if there is a spare SATA slot on the motherboard. Or if not wanting the hard drive running all the time, you could get a caddy or enclosure, for the occasional use as an external USB connected drive for storing music, video etc.. Nev. Armageddon Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 I have to agree with Nev unless your planning on changing your operating system since something like Windows 7 with all updates and programs etc will take up 20 gig at least of a 32 gig drive ,if you was planning on that then i'd suggest going bigger but if your going to stick with XP then you should be ok with the uses you suggest Quote Google is your friend We are all members helping other members. alexsurridge Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 hi armageddon and nev, thanks for your help, i went "ott" and bought CT128V4SSD2 128GB Crucial v4 SATA 3Gb/s 2.5-inch SSD (SATA II) on this computer i'm actually using vista and i want to keep my options open for windows 7/8 for 60quid delivered it sounds like a bargain. just hope its as easy to fit as every1 says. thank you alex Quote
Plastic Nev Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Sounds good to me, don't forget to turn off the defrag, it isn't needed on a SSD, but if left running it is said that it can reduce the life of the SSD due to it moving files by deleting and rewriting them. alexsurridge Posted November 30, 2012 Author Posted November 30, 2012 (edited) sorry for sounding dumb, but how do you disable defrag? and i'm also going to update my bios before installing new ssd, can this be done by using a usb stick? on the tutorials i've read they all use floppy, but i don't have a floppy drive. i just want to check with you guys that i'm downloading the right bios (as i've never done this before) this is from the asus website. http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5VD2VM/#download oh and also should i swap to ahci not raid? i'm not sure what it means but it seems to be the done thing. thanks again, i'm learning all the time and really appreciate your help and advice. thanks alex Edited November 30, 2012 by alexsurridge Quote
Plastic Nev Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Unless absolutely necessary, we never advise updating or flashing the BIOS. If it is working OK leave it alone as the BIOS is one thing that cannot be easily recovered if it goes wrong, so you are then left with an expensive, but pretty door stop. Disabling the Defrag, This is for Windows 7, but should be similar for Vista, go to all Programs, then Accessories, then System tools, you will find "Disk Defragmenter", open that and click "Configure Schedule" there is a tick in the box for "Run on a schedule". just remove that tick. As for the raid issue I will leave that to someone who knows the system. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. alexsurridge Posted December 4, 2012 Author Posted December 4, 2012 (edited) okay i thought i'd just update you on my progress, i haven't updated the bios. i have now installed my new ssd (which hasn't actually speeded the system up at all) and i did change the raid settings to ahci (but i am unsure what it does) i have installed my new graphics card asus hd 6450 1gb ddr3 i have changed monitor to pc conection from dsub to hdmi and STILL the livestream and catch up video quality is jittery and lagging!! i feel like i must have the wrong settings somewhere along the line. monitor is set to 1920x1080 and all the drivers are up to date. oh and my internet connection averages at 7mbps which i would have thought should be fine to livestream (atleast it always used to be) so the original bsod problem is solved but i still have a problem of the system freezing on me from time to time. (genraly when i'm watching videos) any advice would be greatfully received. thanks alex Edited December 4, 2012 by alexsurridge Quote
